Less New BBC programming in 2023

Quote:
The BBC is to broadcast 1,000 fewer hours of new TV programmes this year as part of a drive to save money.
Quote:
Half of the 1,000-hour cut will come from sport, with fewer major events in 2023. Elsewhere, BBC Four is showing more material from the archives.

I look forward to next year and a commitment to increase content by 500 hours.

and same with BBC Local Radio in England which will see local programmes only being broadcast on weekdays and then only between 6am and 2pm.

However there does seem to be some indication that BBC Four might just survive.

Inevitable after constant Govt attacks, and freezing of the licence fee for years. Cheap imported and repeated tv is the future. Shame, we used to make really good tv programmes.Just like the rest of UK plc, we make diddly squat anylonger.

Continuous production on a permanent set is relatively cheap, especially when there’s a need to justify costs on BBC1 by ratings. Niche productions and high cost ones are the ones they’ll be making fewer of.

Having said that, it looks like the budget for Doctor Who has become astronomical because Disney+ has bought rest-of-the-world distribution rights on condition that there’s an uptick in FX and guest star profiles.
