Re: What are you reading?

Classic hard science fiction. The best read I've had for ages. Reminiscent of Benford, Pournelle. Niven and Hamilton at their best

Roger MacBride Allen - Hunted Earth 01 - The Ring of Charon

Roger M. Allen's "Ring of Charon" is great science-fiction. A hence-undiscovered alien race causes the Earth to disappear through a wormhole due to the unauthorized experiments of a gravity scientist, and the remaining off-Earth scientists try to find out what really happened. The story is told brillantly through the eyes of the human scientists, and the strange Charonians who plan to use the Earth for their own ends, which are not good for mankind. The way that the Charonians are Von Neumann creatures is a bit hard to swallow, as is the occasional overload of detail, as well the Naked Purple movement and the K-Crash, but Allen manages to be a master storyteller, and weaves a great story of human survival and the need for curiousity.

Roger MacBride Allen - Hunted Earth 02 - The Shattered Sphere

Allen combines the ideas of hard science with the delights of a fast-paced action thriller in this spellbinding sequel to The Ring of Charon. Earth has been kidnapped by the Charonians, a race of dangerous aliens. An Adversary powerful enough to terrify the otherwise untouchable Charonians enters the picture. But, can he save the Earth?

Re: What are you reading?

Stumbled upon a great series of books by a guy called Richard Raymond Haywood (RR Haywood)
The Undead
A deadly infection spreads across Europe. The Undead series: a terrifying account of one man desperately struggling to survive this harrowing event day by day. Part one - days one to three.
Howie is at home on a rare Friday night off work when an infection which has rapidly spread across Europe hits his hometown on the South Coast of England. Luck sees him through the first night when many others are taken down and infected, only to rise again as the undead. In surviving, Howie quickly learns and evolves, developing a new set of skills that will save him from disaster.
With a former work colleague, Dave, at his side, he braves the urban squalor of a ruined Portsmouth and begins to understand his desire to remain good in a world rapidly descending into chaos, where only the strongest survive.

That would be me, back in September.

If you liked that, can I recommend John Birmingham's Axis of Time trilogy - Weapons of Choice, Designated Targets, & Final Impact.
Quote:
On the eve of America’s greatest victory in the Pacific,
a catastrophic event disrupts the course of World War II, forever changing the rules of combat. . . .

The impossible has spawned the unthinkable. A military experiment in the year 2021 has thrust an American-led multinational armada back to 1942, right into the middle of the U.S. naval task force speeding toward Midway Atoll—and what was to be the most spectacular U.S. triumph of the entire war.

Thousands died in the chaos, but the ripples had only begun. For these veterans of Pearl Harbor—led by Admirals Nimitz, Halsey, and Spruance—have never seen a helicopter, or a satellite link, or a nuclear weapon. And they’ve never encountered an African American colonel or a British naval commander who was a woman and half-Pakistani. While they embrace the armada’s awesome firepower, they may find the twenty-first century sailors themselves far from acceptable.

Initial jubilation at news the Allies would win the war is quickly doused by the chilling realization that the time travelers themselves—by their very presence—have rendered history null and void. Celebration turns to dread when the possibility arises that other elements of the twenty-first century task force may have also made the trip—and might now be aiding Yamamoto and the Japanese.

What happens next is anybody’s guess—and everybody’s nightmare. . . .
Cracking reads...

Why does that sound like a particular film from the 80's??

I like technical fiction but I'm more into space operas atm

Re: What are you reading?

I liked the tech in AoT, but what I really liked was the culture clash between the people from the 2020s (used to instant-access technology/information, modern ethics/morals, sexual/racial equality, etc.) and the views of those in the '40s.

If you like SO, have you tried Neal Asher?

Re: What are you reading?

I read avidly, I've just read (on ebook) all the Stephen Baxtor Xeelee Sequence, then all the James S A Corey Expanse series (Was just on TV too) then all of Alistair Reynolds work House of Suns, Poseidons Children, Revelation space etc etc. So a hefty dose of mostly hard sci fi.

Just moving onto the last of the Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine

Re: What are you reading?

I would like to heartily second Hugh's recommendation for Axis of Time.

I am not usually a fan of alternate history but AoT was one hell of a page turner.

Apart from the initial premise you can forget all about The Philadelphia Experiment. It is not even in the same street.

Re: What are you reading?

Being and Time, Martin Heidegger.

I doubt it's a popular choice on here with so many Sci-Fi and fiction fans. But such a enriching read.
