Police are issuing a warning about a sophisticated new phone scam in which the victim is targeted with a phone call from a loved one's phone number. North Yorkshire Police have issued a warning after a man received a call from his wife's mobile number.
On answering the call, a man with a 'foreign sounding accent introduced himself as a doctor from the Friarage Hospital, stating that his wife had been in a car accident and required emergency surgery. -> Chief fire officer apologises for using the word 'man' to describe firefighter However, he was also told that the procedure was not covered by the NHS and requested bank details to make a transfer of £300 to cover the surgery. The police warning added: "The reportee has replied by stating he would make his way to the hospital immediately and so the caller has hung up. "He has then called his wife's number back, who answered fit and well.

IIRC there's a proposal to make it illegal in the UK for the same reasons. Can't come soon enough IMO.

@Richard good heads-up.
My favourite response to cold callers (and I have responded to a few unknown numbers when I was expecting a legit call) is to be completely polite, cheery, helpful and then ask who they wanted to speak to as 'we're very busy in the office today' (I don't work in an office).
It seems to work well. "Well if you can find out who you needed to... please call back... thank you for calling "
Oh, and then I block the number.
