New BSG series in the pipeline. I am not sure how I feel about this. Even if it is good do we really need it? It pains me to think that the "new" series is 17 years old but it is so good in terms of story and production quality that we don't need a remake/reboot imho. There are plenty of more deserving series I can think of.

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

I know we all want the Star Wars saga films to look like a perfectly consistent nine-chapter epic but the reality is that they are three separate trilogies produced decades apart, in the wrong order, and with no clear forward-looking concept, within each trilogy, of the story outside of itself and its predecessors. They were all made according to the storytelling techniques and the movie-making fashions of the time with the single exception of Episode IV which pretty much invented movie-making techniques then eschewed storytelling fashion in order to tell its story in a way that was considered extremely old-school at the time.

Nonetheless there are certain conventions within star wars saga storytelling and The Last Jedi plays around with them a bit. It makes for an unsettling, bleak tale, but I think it is the direction V was going in, and might have gone further towards had the conventions of the time allowed it. Giving the heroes a good kicking at every turn and leaving everything unresolved at the end was very brave for a family film in 1980, even if they were at that point assured of the chance to complete the story with another film.

There are plenty of deliberate nods towards V in The Last Jedi and in many ways its possible to view the two stories as flip sides of the same coin. Did Rian Johnson push it too far in one direction, forcing Disney to beg JJ Abrams to 'repair' the franchise with a grand finale? Maybe. But I still think TLJ is an excellent, thought-provoking piece of cinema, and a good example of the strengths of permitting different storytelling approaches within a shared universe.

Anyway, back to the topic.

I'm delighted to hear that Taika Waititi is getting a star wars feature film gig. He deserves it on the strength of Mandalorian part 8 alone. And also Thor Ragnarok, which is one of my favourite MCU films.

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

The new Fox show NeXt will debut in the autumn (on Mondays, 9pm) as part of the Fox schedule announced yesterday.

It was originally expected in the summer, but Fox held it back due to the current virus situation meaning they have no new production atm.

The one good idea in TLJ was that anyone could be a Jedi, that Rey was indeed “Rey from nowhere” the very last scene with that kid and the broom. Showing that the new rebellion will come from those unseen and unknown.

TRoS binned that and made Rey part of a dynasty.

TRoS, although not terrible, was no where near as good as it might have been, indeed TLJ could have been the springboard for new direction of movies and not have been constrained to the 9 movie arc.

Anyway the best Star Wars movie O/S of the original trilogy is Rogue One. so there!

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

The CW is doing a Kung Fu reboot, but of course, there is a catch.
Yep, you guessed it, the lead character is switched to be a young woman.

l thought the original series with David Carradine as the lead was superb as l remember being to glued to it when it came on TV.

l will give the new series a go and reserve my judgement until then.

Never heard of it but it sounds good. I love stuff like this if it is done well.

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

Good idea to give them a bit of breathing room. Schedule wise they can easily catch up because they can run the series through constantly every week, without any of the usual padding gaps, till May which is the end fall season and then it will bring them back in sync for a normal September/October start. Tbh I would rather them do that anyway. Some series have ridiculous 6-8 week mid-season breaks over xmas and then have 2-3 gaps between eps after that in February and March. I would rather them have distinct windows when one series runs September - December and finishes for xmas and then you get another series that runs January - April ish. I think what they are planning to do with The Walking Dead franchise epitomises my point, there will always be one series on air.

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

There have been a lot of cast reunions for old series and movies recently and Star Trek is the next one up The Voyager cast are reuniting on youtube on 26th May. I am not sure which channel but I'll keep my eyes peeled and as soon as I see the video I'll post it here.
