It's a none starter. Openreach provide the speed based on the line quality. BTWholesale provide the access and capacity.

Its funny how its the ASA and not Ofcom who are forcing this through.

it is about time and such a shame it has taken them so long to catch up because we were all saying this back in 2009.

and we did mention that its not really fair on smaller ISP's who rely on the access network to provide speeds (at the time it was "up to 24mb") and the ISP had bags of bandwidth but the phone cabled couldn't carry it

...not that im moaning, this can only be a good thing for the consumer

Virgin Media has hit back after a report by Which? claimed that UK broadband connections are, on average, 51% slower than advertised.

The consumer website said customers on Virgin’s 200Mbps package were in fact getting an average of 52Mbps – just 26% of the speed promised.

Tbh i am on Virgins side on this one. I could believe it 8 years ago; the forum was flooded with people complaining about speed issues but they have come on leaps and bounds since then.

I think Virgin has always been a case of winners and losers. Some get full speed 24/7, some get crap speeds 24/7. I can believe Which on this one.

How? Its not the ISPS fault if someones phoneline is far away from the exchange. This will incentivise ISPS not to offer broadband to folk who can only get 2mb

Due to the fact people dont know how to conduct a speedtest properly

Interesting finding - I've run multiple speedtest on speedtest.net using wired and wireless and different O/S, browser. Figures are decimals of expected.

Sam Knows box : 1 pretty much across the board
Linux laptop (wired) : 1
Windows laptop (wireless) : .65
Linux laptop (wireless) : .15 (possible due to drivers and age of laptop)

Windows desktop (wired) test run fairly close together and repeatable -
Browser to website : 1
Desktop app : .1-.2

Now if you do browse to website and get speeds over 100Mb on Windows 10 you are prompted to use the app for more accurate readings but the app gives a reading well off the expected given data from SamKnows and other wired devices. Yet the app is the method Ookla recommend.

I also get lower figures from other speedtest sites.
