Re: The 5p bag charges...

It's slightly different in Scotland.

Quote:
If you're a Scottish retailer, Zero Waste Scotland is helping you understand what the regulations mean for your business through their website Carrier Bag Charge Scotland.

The money raised from charging for carrier bags belongs to your business, however, the Scottish Government is keen to see this money donated to good causes.

Your business can sign up to the Carrier Bag Commitment portal to report the number of bags sold and the amount of money donated

Re: The 5p bag charges...

Different how ?

Looks like Scottish shops are just as free to keep the money if they wish.

Re: The 5p bag charges...

The way it's worded sounds more like yes you could keep the money and not tell us how many bags you sold but we would rather you donated to charity and told us.

Re: The 5p bag charges...

Simplest answer is to get a rather more permanent bag and use that..

The bag charge has actually been in Scotland for 4 years already. Wow.

Re: The 5p bag charges...

Some supermarkets put inventory tags on their baskets so you can’t take them out of the store. If they are situated in an area where a significant portion of the local inhabitants have difficulty with the concept of not stealing things, they should just do that. I bet they already have coin slots on their trolleys.

You can tell a lot about a locality by the supermarket trolleys ... eg. Asda in Bearsden does not require a coin, Asda in Clydebank does.

Re: The 5p bag charges...

A lot of people tend to forget their bag for life or pop in for goods unexpectedly. They then end up with a load of bags at home; maybe an idea could be to offer the option to use something with a deposit that's refunded upon return?

Last time I used Morrisons for home delivery (ages ago due to them passing off old fruit to online customers), they charged for normal bags, but the next time you could hand them back in for a refund.

I thought that this would be a good idea for in-store purchases, but for online I now use Tesco who deliver without bags in the first place if you request this.

Re: The 5p bag charges...

We always remember bags when we are going shopping and usually if I pop in unexpectedly I carry a couple of bags in my rucksack if I don't have room in it for what I pick up.

It's not too hard to remember them now as the charge has been around for 4 years in Scotland.

I think a lot of people keep some in the boot of their car too.

Re: The 5p bag charges...

I have loads of the heavy duty bags that Tesco & Sainsbury's do, I try and keep them in the boot with a insulated bag.

A few years back I bought a thermos bag which is very good at keeping stuff cold.

The 5p fee for plastic carrier bags in England will be doubled to 10p, and extended to all shops, under plans set out by the environment secretary.

Answer for shops is to go back to paper bags, so the unwary shopper has to remember to bring their own bag, or just not buy anything too heavy or wet.

Some of my local independent shops have cottoned on to this idea.

Some years ago Homebase changed to paper bags but now the only use plastic bags.

I doubt if charging 10p per bag will have much effect but changing 50p or more for a plastic bag would have an effect.
