Is it possible for 2 Bluetooth devices to be too close?
As I type, my new Fire HD 10 is trying - and failing - to find my Fire 8; it's still searching for available devices.
The odd thing is that it did find the older Fire a few hours ago and I was able to transfer several files with no problem whatsoever; now, though, the Fire 10 doesn't want to know. They are currently next to each other. Is that somehow the problem?

Separate them and find out.

Nope, that didn't work.
The most baffling thing is that the two devices did pair earlier in the day, but now they won't. Oh well, I guess I'll sleep on it and do some research later.

try forgetting both devices and reconnecting.

Re: Is it possible for 2 Bluetooth devices to be too close?
Hmm, I've found a solution of sorts: both devices can now see my laptop, so that's acting as a go-between.
Next on the agenda is figuring out how to transfer dozens of folders containing hundreds of music files. It isn't really practical via Bluetooth, as you can't send folders - only specific files. But physically connecting the Fire 10 to the laptop doesn't work, as the USB connection is slightly different from the usual micro format - although the laptop can see the Fire, it can't see anything on it. This is a common problem with USB cables and non-PC devices.
I think I'll have to come up with something clever. I've ordered an SD card; it might be possible, I suppose, to pop the card into the Fire 8, copy the files and folders to that, then transfer the card to the Fire 10 and pull the files off it. I think that's possible...
- it is possible, and it worked! Result!

USB is USB and what can see what has nothing to do with what USB is in use. The reason your laptop couldn't "see" anything is because when you connect it, you need to enable file transfers on the tablet itself - usually you'll get a notification you tap on to change mode from the default "charging" to File Transfer.
