“We could see as much as a metre of sea level rise before the end of the century, so within the lifetime of today’s children, and that has a major impact on coastal flooding and erosion.” Prof Jim Hall, another member of the committee, said: “We are not prepared.”

The regions affected include areas with soft, eroding shores in the south and east, as well as low-lying areas in East Anglia, Lincolnshire, parts of the south-west such as the Somerset Levels, and the coast between Liverpool and Blackpool in the north-west.“

As well as erosion there is also deposition.

A bit cynical Den !. It's an advisory committee of experts that the Govt hire as they themselves are thick.

Why would Nasa make this kind of stuff up? I believe it's a credible source.

Mr Serreze and other experts do not know if the Antarctic ice level
fall is a natural blip
or a sign that long-term global warming is finally
catching up with the south pole.

Sept. 27, 2018: The sun is entering one of the deepest Solar Minima
of the Space Age. Sunspots have been absent for most of 2018, and the
sun’s ultraviolet output has sharply dropped. New research shows that
Earth’s upper atmosphere is responding.
“We see a cooling trend,” says Martin Mlynczak of NASA’s Langley
Research Center. “High above Earth’s surface, near the edge of space,
our atmosphere is losing heat energy. If current trends continue, it could
soon set a Space Age record for cold.”
There was a time when there was no ice on Antarctica. Then Man came along.....

Re: Climate Change - record World temp. rises in Feb.

I have to say that The Independents' article doesn't explicitly say that climate change is the driver of this sudden change and this does match up with the original article (see here for link - https://www.pnas.org/content/early/2.../25/1906556116 PNAS article - nice!)

What's interesting here is that antarctic sea ice has been increasing over the years from 1978 to around 2014 at which point it suddenly dropped back to 1978 levels in 3 years. What it does illustrate is that the climate can change suddenly and surprisingly at a rate much faster than expected. Also that there is some correlation between sea ice changes and conditions further afield. However, that paper is very much saying what has happened, not why...

Here's another article about this research from New Scientist - https://www.newscientist.com/article...dont-know-why/

I have to say that the author of this paper has a hell of a CV! - https://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/sed/bi...re.l.parkinson

The signs and impacts of global heating are speeding up, the latest science on climate change, published ahead of key UN talks in New York, says.
The data, compiled by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), says the five-year period from 2014 to 2019 is the warmest on record.
Sea-level rise has accelerated significantly over the same period, as CO2 emissions have hit new highs.

We might already past the point we can do anything, yet still we obsess with other trifling issues like Brexit. All of which will be an irrelevance at the end of the day as we keep ignoring the main threat to our future.
