Number of channels

There was a recent notification of work in my area from Virgin Media Business. I asked my contact in VMB what the work actually was and was told it was to upgrade the area to a 32 downstream channels and is one of the first areas to receive that change.

I thought it odd, since current CPE only supports 24, and wondered if he was mistaken.

Prior to the upgrade the Hitron device I have shows the full 24 downstream channels (and 3 up). THe Hitron has slots 1-24 and also the channels IDs were previously 1-24. However I now see that after some reboots slot 2 will list channel id 5 and the channel numbers go up to 28 currently, at a higher frequency than I have seen before, this would seem to support a channel group of larger than 24....

Re: Number of channels

Nope the Hitron only supports 24 downstream channels. Quite a few areas are having the 32 channel upgrade I’ve been told, but it’ll be on a need basis not a blanket basis. The channel ID is just a label, it’s irrelevant to anything to be honest, so as you’ve noticed your modem will lock on to 24 of the 32, and in theory there should be a bit of load balancing done by the CMTS to evenly distribute

Re: Number of channels

Spot on Tech, just because there are more than 24 downstream's doens't mean you will get access to more concurrent channels. The current Hub 3 and Hitron support 24 downstream channels, it will be DOCSIS 3.1 before we start seeing CPE that will handle more than this.

Re: Number of channels

Yes understood that the Hitron can only handle 24 downstream channels- it's just that in this area now it can select 24 from a pool of 32. Wondered if that was to prepare for CPE that supports 32, or just to increase capacity.

Re: Number of channels

Currently it will be for more capacity. I would imagine the next CPE step will be docsis 3.1, but who knows there may be a 32 channel modem launched at some point.

Re: Number of channels

I think the last link Igni gave regarding CPE which Liberty Global were trialling was 32 downstream and 8 up
