Most ridiculous Ideas and a waste of money
http://news.sky.com/story/1061487/lo...unced-by-boris
I honestly cannot understand why Stupid Boris wants to spend so much money on this brainless idea.
I am a keen cyclist myself, but cannot understand why he wants to use so much money to do this. What has to happen to spend this money on road safety, improvements the conditions of the roads, teaching cyclist how to use the road safely - the biggest problems that l find with cyclist is that they go through RED lights, cycle on the pavements, they cause accidents and quite a lot of the times have accident and get them self killed.
90% of cyclists that l see at night don't even have lights on the cycles. Wasn't there a young person killed in Docklands last year when they were hit by a vehicle, and two years ago a woman cyclist was killed in Southall when she went through the lights and killed by a lorry turning left and she was quashed up against railings.
I think Boris should think about this as Cyclist can also be a danger on the roads, without the proper training and not wearing hi vis and using lights.

from the article:

The route will include Dutch-style fully segregated cycle tracks along, among other places, the Victoria Embankment and the Westway*Flyover.

sounds like he's addressing safety to me.

Do what they do in my town, ban cyclists from using bus lanes, and only allow buses & taxis (and the odd mini cab who thinks hes a taxi)

Some people need some sense drummed into them. Don't undercut motorised traffic ever. Particularly Lorries and Buses. Take the middle of the lane at junctions and take your place in the queue. Basically, pretend you're a car at intersections, and you shouldn't encounter too many dangerous situations.

I totally agree what I don't like to see is the ones that use the roads then mount the pavement when they come to a red light and back on the road again the other side.....you either ride on the road or the pavement in my book

Re: Most ridiculous Ideas and a waste of money
A local road, on a busy bus route, has just been marked with parking bays AND cycle lanes on both side, leaving only one, single lane down the middle for 2 way traffic! Don't they measure things before sending out the painters?

I know. I'm a keen cyclist myself, but I have to admit that cycling attracts a disproportionate amount of monomaniac morons.
Either way: segregated cycle paths are great. £900 million for 15 miles sounds like an awful lot of money though.

once again i agree ,mixing cycle lanes with other much larger traffic was always going to end in tears ,problem is though with the very limited space in town/city centers where do you put them .I would say a large part of the cost in this case is the total segregation of the cycle lane as opposed to just painting a white line on the path or road ,it will probably be like a mini road for cyclists only.
