All they do these days is the situation and expect the comedy to naturally come. Most shows only have 2-3 real gags and you can see them coming 10 minutes before they actually arrive and even then they're just not funny.

I know it is a long list but it is an example of some of the series I have watched and thoroughly enjoy. You have got your usual Stargate and Star Trek in there which could keep you going for a while but I am sure there are plenty of other series which you haven't previously considered. If you don't want anything too sci-fi-y Alias, Homeland and 24 and excellent at keeping you on your toes. Dexter is another one which keep you coming back for more and it feels good to like what should be a bad guy.
