Scotland scraps tax cut
Quote:
Controversial plans to cut the amount of tax paid by passengers flying from Scottish airports have been scrapped after a backlash over the environmental impact.
The Scottish government had wanted to reduce air departure tax by 50% before eventually abolishing it completely.

It was ill conceived because it encouraged more passengers to use air travel, which would put more planes in the air, which would cause more pollution.
It did not sit well with the SNP's views on the environment. That is why it was withdrawn.

They are a minority government that relies on Green votes to get a budget through parliament. That’s why it was withdrawn.
The SNP has no fixed views about anything except independence.

Why is that ill conceived ?
You might not agree with it, but that doesnt make it ill conceived.

Re: Scotland scraps tax cut
They wanted to get more people in and reducing the cost would help. Flying in to London then car/coach/train to Scotland takes a long time and can be very expensive. Reducing price to get there quickly would likely generate more income than that lost on air tax.

How does reducing departure tax get more people in?

Because unless you are migrating you also need to leave so surely a return ticket would also have element of departure tax.

Re: Scotland scraps tax cut
Because it reduces the overall cost of a return ticket.
