I could have told you that 3D would be a 5-minute wonder. It's the glasses and the nausea that put people off.
4k is a different matter, though, because it provides such good PQ for larger screens.
It's 8K that is more likely to flounder as the difference in PQ would not be noticeable on any screen you are likely to have in your lounge (unless perhaps wall-to-wall screens ever become the rage).

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
BBC are to show the World Cup in 4K and virtual reality via app!
But first come first served.
But then they say only tens of thousands can watch live in HD, confused.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
Won't improve the outcome though: Win one by luck. Draw one that should have been won. Lose one by penalties and on the plane home.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
Similar to V6/BT/Sky Q, but it will be the first in HLG (HDR).
I assume it is down to costs that it is not being shown on Sky and Virgin, or to not annoy Freeview payers too.
On the BBC list the V6 box is down to be confirmed for HLG.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
The SkyQ Planet Earth trial was for UHD only - not HLG/HDR.

BBC iPlayer will stream four stunning minutes of Planet Earth II footage in the highest quality the BBC has ever broadcast. The experimental footage will be available in Ultra HD and Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) on compatible connected TVs and set-top boxes from today until early next year.

Seems like that's a reasonably fair way to do it as the first major 4K streaming they've done.
Better the limit the numbers than risk the stream quality itself (and even then that might still happen)
And if you're limiting the numbers, then first come first served again seems fair.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
The SkyQ box is NOT a connected box - iPlayer is a download only service and is not streamed. There is no live capacity for the service.
The SkyQ box has not yet had the HDR software update.
It may have had the HLG version but it would only play back in regular 4K.
HDR is due later in the year but as Sky are still rolling out their latest software with still doesn't have HDR - it is inlikely to appear in the next fe weeks.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
Sky Q is a connected box it just doesn't have the version of iPlayer that smart TV's have , it uses progressive download as opposed to streaming.
Other apps on Sky Q use streaming such as YouTube , Vevo , Red Bull TV and the forthcoming Netflix service as well as the sidebar apps.
