Is the hub getting overwhelmed by a house full of students?

It has reset a few times to factory default settings, and it possible there are some heavy users in the house. Would it be worth investing in a router? I always thought the hub was cheap plastic thats mass distributed and doesn't function well outside of modem mode

Network log shows some TEK Invalid - Invalid Key Sequence Number, as well as DHCP rebind warnings, SYNC Timing Synchronization failure

5 people in the house. 3 are standard gaming, browsing, netflix HD streaming. 1 is probably torrenting a bit. Other is heavy gamer and usually uploading and downloading stuff to FTP regularly.

I'm also in the middle of a backblaze backup

Re: Is the hub getting overwhelmed by a house full of students?

Sounds like you are choking the upload, especially with blackblaze and torrents.

Ah OK. I'll see if pausing the uploading side has any effect

Time uploading to happen overnight. You might persuade the torrent user to do the same.

Re: Is the hub getting overwhelmed by a house full of students?

yeah, tbh though is a sort of three pronged problem. The guys are right in what they said above, the shub is cack under load and the best bit about getting a proper router is that it will have all sorts of features for prioritising traffic, bandwidth limiting and other stuff. As an example you can prioritise a particular pc, ip address, or application (game) if the gaming guys are moaning about lag so they get first dibs at the bandwidth and you get whatever is left for torrenting etc. Same goes Netflix.

It would be worth while investing in a proper router which you can keep for years to come. I would highly recommend something like this and depending how large the house is it would be absolutely priceless going for the twin pack for the extra £50 and using AI mesh for your wireless network. Have a look here for my guide on the general options available, I post some screen dumps for the qos stuff if you are interested.

When considering your options and what is best for all of your long term (bearing in mind that your life revolves the internet) you may also want to take a look at this.

Re: Is the hub getting overwhelmed by a house full of students?

The Asus routers are pretty good, but if you want to go overkill, look at a unifi setup.

I could never go back!

A USG and 1 decent AP is about £230, so similar cost to the Asus route, a bit more complex to set up obviously.

Re: Is the hub getting overwhelmed by a house full of students?

I am a big fan of Unifi/Ubiquiti! The only reason I haven't gone for it myself is because I'd need some ethernet around the place to really make the most of it.

Neat. Have a LR, Outdoor mesh and a Nano-HD myself. The HD is capable of some serious speed.
