The best anti-hero sci-fi ever had, and a genuinely nice man as well. I was lucky to meet him once, as a star struck teenager.

Unhappy Re: RIP - Paul Darrow

He had some of the best lines in Blake's 7 and impeccable delivery, and was far and away one of our most charismatic actors. Like Gareth Thomas, he'll be missed. I'll definitely be raising a glass to him at Redemption '20.
Several, probably.

From Breakdown:

Avon: Blake, in the unlikely event that we survive this...
Blake: Yes?
Avon: I'm finished. Staying with you requires a degree of stupidity of which I no longer feel capable.
Blake: Now you're just being modest.

Re: RIP - Paul Darrow

I always thought he played Avon well. Always conveyed the impression that not only did Avon not care if the one (or more) of the other characters died, but that he thought he would benefit from it if they did.

I think the final cast of Blake's 7 had an interesting mix of acting styles. Paul Darrow and Gareth Thomas seemed to have a more theatre-based style of acting, where the actor has to amplify the character slightly to project to the audience. Glynis Barber seems to do this to a lesser extent. Josette Simon, Stephen Pacey and Micheal Keating play their characters in a more reserved, naturalistic way. I'm not criticising any of them, I just enjoy the contrast.

Also, I think modern Sci Fi (since the reboot of BSG) has a slightly depressing, negative feel. Blake's 7 did this far more believably than most modern Sci Fi shows, because it very effectively conveyed the impression that these were people who were thrown together, and hated each other, but worked together because they were faced with an oppressive force they couldn't defeat on their own.

Part of me would like to see a Star Wars style Blake's 7 special edition, with all the special effects re-done (I've even seen some amazing looking attempts by fans to update the SFX on You tube), but I think they should leave it alone, unless they are willing to invest the money required for a serious improvement. Sadly, I don't think that will happen, certainly not in the UK. No one in the UK appears to be investing a lot in Sci Fi in this country. Even Doctor Who, which is arguably the flagship Sci Fi show in this country is having budget cuts.

Someone like Netflix might put up the required money, but they'd have to see a good case that they'd get their money back, so I don't think that will happen.
