Another difference between the English scheme and the Welsh scheme then.

Re: The 5p bag charges...
Paper bags aren't without their problems and there's still some doubt about which are worse for the environment overall.
http://www.theguardian.com/environme...ags-which-best
We already re-use all our bags (plastic and paper) in one way or another, including the stronger 'bag for life' versions we started using years ago which we only swap for new when they're falling apart.

Re: The 5p bag charges...
It's had the desired effect in Scotland where pretty much every bag is included in the charge.
Quote:
The number of plastic bags handed out in stores was slashed by 80% - the equivalent of 650 million carriers - in the first year of Scotland's 5p charge.
New figures were released on the anniversary of its introduction.
The charge for single-use carriers has also raised about £6.7m for good causes in the past 12 months.

Re: The 5p bag charges...
Back from Spain where they have been charging for ages..Seems some don't care and others just use their own. they don't seem that bothered. They are far more into recycling as well.I think we are too far behind with dealing with rubbish and recycling than the EU.

Re: The 5p bag charges...
I think a problem here is that some bags that you pay 5p for are so flimsy that they burst. I go into many corner shops and get charged 5p for a flimsy blue bag, which are so bad, its just not worth it
I have no problem in the 'bag for life' stuff as they are decent bags. My objection is that Tesco, ASDA or Morrisons - they have there logo on that with a 'bar' on. Surely that is FREE advertisement for the store - isn't it.

It's your choice to shop there and use their bags. Take your own and then you're not doing their corporate advertising? Simples.

Did you object to using their bags before the charge, given that supermarket bags, whether "normal" or "bag for life", always have the name/logo on them?

Corner shops shouldn't be charging and I've noticed an increase in quality since charging began
