Question Is my remote dead?

Thinking about eBaying my redundant Humax Freeview box, I connected it to my Sony Bravia and the aerial, finally got a signal on the screen and could change channels with the Humax buttons.
The remote, however, could do nothing in spite of battery changes from existing cable and Sony remotes. How do I determine if the fault is in the remote or in the box's sensor, anyone? My only other infra-red source is a Palm T5 PDA, if that helps...
