Throttling?
I'm trying to download some linux distros over torrent and the speeds start off ok but quickly fall back to barely usable. Yet when I switch to my BT FTTC connection they go to the max capable of that connection.
Are they throttling now?

I have no problem with speeds. Amazing how many use torrents for Linux distros.

Re: Throttling?
I’d not be in the least surprised if traffic ‘shaping’ is in effect for P2P at the moment, due to everyone’s favourite virus and the strain on certain parts of their network.
Humour me - Can you always get x-amount @ x-Mbps or x-Mbps for so long (before it drops)?

I don't know but mine stays the same rate throughout, then again I do use a VPN because I'm not downloading Linux distros.

I would, I dont have any speed issues.
I still use a local copy of transmission for a few torrents per week.
All "Linux Distros" of course.
You might want to remember that there is a lot more traffic generally atm, esp at peak times.

Re: Throttling?
Apparently a performance drop of about 3% across the board.

A VPN would almost certainly help
The traffic shapers they use are very easy to set time-defined burst periods on, hence why I was curious. I wonder if they're implementing that in certain areas.

I had exactly the same thing Thursday evening, my speed dropped off a cliff and wouldn't go over 200k/sec. It only lasted a few hours and went back to normal over night and was fine all day yesterday.

In a phone call to Virgin Business last week I was told that bandwidth to home users is being throttled.

That is incorrect, VM have come out and said there isn't a capacity issue on the network during the lockdown and there is ample bandwidth to go around. I have been downloading my torrents and had some chunky game updates recently and they have all blasted at full speed
