Unhappy Struggling in Oldham.

Hi,

I've been getting mind numbingly slow speeds from some sites for a couple of weeks now. Even got on to one site admin having a go because the site always seemed down.. Oops. It was onbly myself (and a handful of other NTL users) that were having problems.

While I can get to www.vvoc.com, it's dreadfully slow.
I've tried a few different proxies which give varying results. None any better though than my default. Baguley platform or something I think. UBR04ODH.
I can't ping the site at all, get request timed out. A tracert drops out after 16 hops, yet a friend on some leased work line has no probs.
Are there any tech's who can help, or that are aware of a problem?
I don't surf many sites, but I'd like to at least be able to view the one I surf most.

Ta muchly for any help/pointers.

Re: Struggling in Oldham.

There has been work going on in the area the last few weeks.
Although download speeds were good, web pages have always loaded slower than they should have, until last week, my IP changed from 213.x.x.x to 86.x.x.x and now pages are loading faster then they ever have during my time with ntl.
Maybe it will be your turn this week.
This area has been on a transparent proxy for some time now, I'm surprised that you are on the Baguley proxy as I thought most of Gtr. Manchester was on a transparent proxy.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I had noticed I had now got bagu in my ident rather than manc.
I've no idea when or why that happened.
Your right, my d/l speeds have been as good as always. 245/260k on a 2mb line. Never had any complaints there, binary and http.
I've still an 81.xxx.xx.xxx IP addy as always - just tried a cold restart there (STB) and released IP etc. No different.
Wish someone would plug the hamster back in. It's like trawling through sludge here right now. I'm getting Firefox's dreaded red dots instead of images now and allsorts.
Bah.

---------- Post added at 15:43 ---------- Previous post was at 15:31 ----------

Having said that - do you think that's quite a hefty spike?
Or possibly realtive to the poor one before it.
I'm under no illusions of course.

secretly hopes for speed upgrade though

1st 512K took 4890 ms = 104.7 KB/sec, approx 863 Kbps, 0.84 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1437 ms = 356.3 KB/sec, approx 2936 Kbps, 2.87 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2156 ms = 237.5 KB/sec, approx 1957 Kbps, 1.91 Mbps
4th 512K took 2140 ms = 239.3 KB/sec, approx 1972 Kbps, 1.93 Mbps

Re: Struggling in Oldham.

Have you tried using NTL's Broadband Medic. I find it very useful. It is a free service and can be downloaded from the NTL World page. I hope this is of some use to you.

Yeh, I think your spike was just part of the previous feed.

Don't know what they have done to my connection but I hope they leave it well alone now, it's like life in the fast lane....

Re: Struggling in Oldham.

Sorry Chief, just noticed you're in Owdham too.
May I ask (without giving too much away) whereabouts-ish? I'm in the top bit past town towards the greener bits.
A friend of mine in Merseyside told me yesterday he'd been downloading from egoshare.com and ended up with ludicrously fast speeds that looked like a speed increase to him, so fingers crossed.

@ barlinnie - No, I haven't. I don't really care much for tweaking applications, preferring to do make any changes manually.
I have the impression that BB Medic was as useful as Correct Connect. i.e. not at all unless you were bereft of any computer literacy (no offence intended). Happy to be proved wrong though if you can.

Thanks for both your replies.

Re: Struggling in Oldham.

I'm in Garden Suburbs.
I went onto 10meg during the test and apart from when ntl have been working on the network it has been rock solid.
I switched from ADSL 18 months ago due to the fact that I had a 512Kb max on my copper wires, recently BT have been relaying new cables to the big CAB near my house so the situation may have improved.

Re: Struggling in Oldham.

I know it well. My Dad used to live on North Gate - my mate still lives down near the cricket ground.
Very close to me then, so there's hope yet..

Finally got a bit fed up today so bit of an update, though not sure if altogether any use.

Released my IP and switched the box off for a while.

Now gone from

81.xxx.xx.xxx
spc1-oldh4-6-0 - bagu

to

82.xx.xx.xx
spc2-oldh4-6-0 - bagu

Got a tad excited when I saw my IP addy had changed, but alas, no difference in surfing in mud, and no better download speeds. Guess the IP has simply just gone back into the pool and I've been assigned another one.

Back to the drawing board then.

Re: Struggling in Oldham.

Thanks for the response again SC.
I'm finding it hard to even get on here tonight.
I'd be very, very grateful if you could post back with any updates you hear of. Trying to get a bit of work done that needed web site access last night left me tearing my hair out.

Cheers.

Re: Struggling in Oldham.

Summat going on for sure. Never seen this sort of report before.

1st 128K took 47 ms = 2788766 Bytes/sec = approx 23203 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 47 ms = 2788766 Bytes/sec = approx 23203 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 46 ms = 2849391 Bytes/sec = approx 23707 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 32 ms = 4096000 Bytes/sec = approx 34079 kbits/sec

1st 128K took 32 ms = 4096000 Bytes/sec = approx 34079 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 31 ms = 4228129 Bytes/sec = approx 35178 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 109 ms = 1202495 Bytes/sec = approx 10005 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 47 ms = 2788766 Bytes/sec = approx 23203 kbits/sec

That's from Robin Walker's though.

The one above gives me 1.91 as usual..
Download speeds still the same, surfing still mighty poo.

Re: Struggling in Oldham.

I go through Oldham an dI have been having problems with pages slow loadingf and high pings when playing CS I am pinging over 200 in many cases and getting kicked from the server. I have spent hours on the phone to tech support trying to get this sorted but its just been a waste of money so far. Will post what its cost me in phone calls to NTL to be no further on when the bill arrives.

Re: Struggling in Oldham.

Well, I've managed to find a pretty good working proxy so *leeeeetle* bit happier today. Also used the Firefox 'about.config' hack to increase maxrequests ( http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1299854/posts ) though I don't like to usually, I'm sure it must put a strain on servers.. That said, I've only increased it very slightly and coupled with the proxy, my surfing experience is much better.
Pings are still way high or none existent as shown below, and tracert is losing route halfway through. Seems to lose it around the cableinet mark - wonder if this could have anything to do with any work that's being implemented re the Telewest merge, as it's their network (I think?).
Trying my utmost not to sound whingy as I'm aware work *is* going on, but I'm becoming more than a bit fed up now.
I should call them really but again, I hate whinging at people.
Just hope something is being done.

Ping/tracert example:
