Irony overload.

It’s been 7 years OB, I doubt you’ll give up shouting down those you disagree with any time soon.

I haven’t shouted people down. I’ve just given my opinion.

Other opinions are available.

Ah, I see…

Others "shout people down".

You just "give your opinion"…

Putin didn’t invade Ukraine - he just was trying to help them "be more Russian"…

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

Well, attempting to rise above all this nonsense, here is a more positive view of what will happen with the streamers over the next few years, to provide a little balance.

https://tbivision.com/2022/09/12/wes...e-svod-growth/

Western Europe is set to approach a quarter of a billion SVOD subscribers in the coming years.

According to the latest figures from Digital TV Research, the region will have 238 million SVOD subscriptions by 2027, up from 165 million at the end of 2021. The report notes that six US-based platforms will account for 81% of all SVOD subscriptions in the region.

Netflix will remain the largest, but will only add 3 million from 2021 for a total of 62 million subscribers. As a result, Netflix’s market share will fall from 36% in 2021 to 26% by 2027.

Disney+ meanwhile will almost double its current base to reach 46 million subscribers by 2027. The newcomer Paramount+/SkyShowtime will add 11 million subscribers and HBO Max will bring in an extra 5 million.

In terms of SVOD revenues, the region will be at US$25 billion by 2027, up from US$16 billion in 2021. The UK will continue to be the largest revenue-generating country in Western Europe.

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

And of course for balance it’ll be smaller than the market for television advertising at 2021

US$31bn https://tbivision.com/2022/09/12/wes...e-svod-growth/

and the entire market in 2018

$102.4bn https://www.researchandmarkets.com/r...e_tv_in_europe

Far from proving your point the opinion piece you have linked to merely emphasises the scale of the problem in evidencing your conclusions.

That line on Netflix though, that’s a topper!

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

Netflix is losing customers at a fast rate and shareholders are far from happy but it's OK Netflix instead of trying to solve the issue will find another way of driving more customers away.

They're probably more interested in reaching profitability now than maintaining market share which makes sense to me. Not sure if that aim is possible given their debt or if they will eventually have to sell themselves to someone like Sony or Microsoft.

No customers = no profit they need to start listening to their customers or they're going to find themselves in a bit of a pickle.
I personally rotate between Netflix and Prime video atm i have 12 months Disney+ anyway.
Sale wise last i heard Google were looking at Netflix.

People will not wait 10 weeks when their colleagues, friends, and the internet are all talking about the show they are "waiting" for.

I was going to say this has always been lost on OB. That a proportion of the viewing population want to watch things at (or near) the same time as other people to discuss. As you say colleagues, friends, family or even just the internet are all mediums for doing so.

Then, I noticed OB’s signature on every post and followed my way onto that forum where he has a thread dedicated to telling others his TV highlights, and what time they will be broadcast on traditional channels!

The Old Boy on Forum Box certainly has a different view of streamers

Sadly, the best programmes now are headed for the streamers, which will probably be our main focus in time.

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

I do find you guys are very quick to draw conclusions from the most unlikely or innocent of statements. My opinion that the streamers will take over is not based on what I want, it's based on a common sense view of what will happen in the future. I accept that some of you disagree. Please let's move on from this petty argument and appreciate the fact that we now have far more choice than ever before. People are getting bored of this same old argument.

The main concern I have had over recent years is that people who are struggling with money and would benefit from streaming would be left behind as costs increase, but I am pleased that AVOD services now seem to be on the advance. Against that, streamers like Netflix and Disney are talking about a cheaper tier with advertisements. My hope is that all the main streamers will ultimately offer a free tier with ads so everyone can enjoy them.

Premium sports will always be paid-for content of course, so no change there.

This is the thing, OB. You don’t actually accept that others disagree. Neither do you factor in the evidence put to you by others. You simply repeat ad nauseum the same “common sense view” that, from a straw poll looking around this forum, isn’t actually that common at all.

You describe streamers “taking over”. Taking over what exactly? The television market as a whole? Yet incumbents are incorporating streaming into their portfolio of products in the marketplace. These aren’t zero sum games with their existing, popular, profitable and massively revenue generating products.

If you merely mean as a technology while recognising the same dominant players will still have a significant presence in the marketplace then this view isn’t supported either given the glacial nature of technological progress.

You feign concern for those who simply want to watch, but not pay, for TV. Yet your vision of “progress” would be more limiting than what is available now where tried and tested mass market technologies are closed down in favour of IP based products.

I probably don’t have the same vision of what television looks like as most on the forum - the technology mix, how many linear channels will persist on each platform, etc. Everyone sees a greater role for streaming, and everyone sees consolidation into global conglomerates. However it is your absolutist view, aginst real world evidence, that somehow persists to dominate conversation because you insist on pushing it most.
