Upselling tat? I think Prime has the levels of penetration that £5bn is a lot to invest to sell more tat.

If and it is a huge if Amazon bid for more football rights there'd be two outcomes.
Prime would raise in price quite a lot or 2 a football addon at a extra charge would be launched, Amazon simply can not continue to absorb costs.

It’s definitely a £30 a month add on for the few million who would subscribe.

Re: Netflix/Streaming Services

If Amazon got big rights - I would expect the EPL to be an add-on for Prime customers.

Maybe £7.99pm Prime and £24.99pm EPL add-on - or £29.99pm for non-Prime customers.

It would certainly be a football add-on. They could also add tiers with a more limited selection of matches for a cheaper price to attract more punters.

Re: Netflix/Streaming Services

It's going to be ridiculously expensive for sports fans, that's what it's going to be. A premiership add on at greater cost than the full Sky Sports add on for Now TV?

I can't see sports fans falling over themselves to pay another £25 a month. Many view the rights as fragmented enough needing Sky and BT without a third service with a sizable proportion of the games.

Amazon don't like people taking their services without them having prime so most likely would only be for prime customers.

Eventually there will come a breaking point and people will say enough is enough.

Re: Netflix/Streaming Services

Slightly off-topic, I got an email from Now TV a couple of days ago offering me another six months on the entertainment package for a whopping £1.60 per month, not too bad for some decent telly on offer.

I read an article this week that stated despite Sky/BT looking to pay no more than last time/ reduce payments, Amazon would not be bidding for any of the main EPL Rights packages.

I would see the status quo being maintained - unless the EPL decide to have a go at streaming matches themselves.

If football fans no longer had football on Sky, they would simply subscribe to Amazon football instead of Sky Sports. Same if Amazon won the contract from BT, subscribers would simply switch. It’s not rocket science. Football fans will follow the football!

If it were that easy we wouldn't have a graveyard of Sky-wannabes.

It's not as straightforward as they will "all switch". BT of course have their wholesale deal with Virgin Media, and subsidise from their telephony/broadband products.

Sports fans who enjoy some football, some golf, formula one, NFL, suddenly find themselves having to buy additional products.

They do not have infinite money - for some eventually choices have to be made.

I don’t think you can compare the providers of sports channels with streaming services. Streamers of sports events do not need to bother about filling their schedules! That’s one cost out of the way for a start.

Football fans have shown very clearly that they are prepared to pay a lot for football. Why would they not switch en masse if their usual provider lost the rights?

As for the problem facing the fans of other sports as well are concerned, I don’t disagree, but of course Sky would charge less for what remained, wouldn’t they?

I doubt they would - they have lists rights to sports in the past few years (premiership rugby union, la liga football to name but 2) but the normal cost to the customer has never gone down.
