When I use the settings on GeekSquad (in particular the APN Type) I am unable to connect to the internet at all.

Have a look at the last post here

Failing that have you deleted the APN settings and used an app to set it up, something like this

Thanks for the link but I cannot find 'Background Data'. It doesn't appear in my Accounts & Sync settings.

Yeah that's a setting for older versions of Android, it's not there anymore.
