Sex Ed in Schools

Quote:
Parents' right to remove children from sex and relationships education could be scrapped under reform plans.

The idea is being considered by the Welsh Government as part of its curriculum changes.

New Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) is being introduced in primary and secondary schools.

And Orthodox Judaism, Catholicism, and plenty of the other religions too unfortunately.

Which is why the ability to bypass that part of the curriculum should be removed.

And make it clear that it's all age appropriate - 'sex eduction' is a very loaded term when for younger children it's about social relationships and treating everyone with respect.

Re: Sex Ed in Schools

It's not only religious parents who are distinctly squeamish about teaching this subject to young children.

So schools will now be responsible for destroying the innocence of young children. A lot of people will be very unhappy.

Re: Sex Ed in Schools

There is nothing wrong in teaching children how families look in 2019 and how the children fit into that.

For instance here's a detailed breakdown of what is taught in what year at the first school from a Google search - http://www.kilmorieschool.co.uk/key-...es/sre-policy/

It's age appropriate and talks about things children will already be able to see and recognise

It does seem bizarre to want to keep children ignorant, learning only their parents prejudices.

I think you can teach children about different relationships during primary school without going into the detail.

Re: Sex Ed in Schools

This is sort of nanny state interference in natural processes.

Never having had any sex education, I nevertheless knew exactly what went where and why.

Re: Sex Ed in Schools

Sex education isn't just about the physical act and most of the time isn't really about that at all. It's why it's referred to as Relationship Education in Primary schools, and Relationship and Sex Education in Secondary schools.

It's more about psychology (why do you feel different as you get older and how does that affect you and others), sociology (why do some families and people look different to you and your own). And where appropriate biology (why is your body changing), and personal responsibility (when should and when shouldn't you do the things your body wants to do).

All of which contributes to a positive view of yourself and others around you.

Exactly! But then I'm retired secondary teacher with an GCE in Human biology so I would support sex education anyway..and leave parents out of the equation because it's not them that's being educated.I think deliberately keeping your child ignorant about sex amounts to child abuse. I'm entirely on the side of the child.
