Using a smartphone for emails on a cruise

I get 250 internet minutes free on cruises as a perk and I normally take my netbook to pick up emails and surf the Web.

If I took my Galaxy Ace 2 and usd that instead, how could I avoid roaming charges, or can't I? And what settings would I have to alter on the phone?
