Trek was on CBS streaming service in the USA and was broadcast each week, mainly as all episodes hadn't been finished before they chose to start showing it.

I think Orphan Black is on a channel in the USA and there for whown each week as broadcast telly.

Re: Altered Carbon

ermmm, I'll let you know tomorrow. I watched 1x01 last night which was really good but I wasn't blown away like I was expecting to be. The special effects are excellent and the set design, costumers and everything else are top notch and for a tv series what they have done is fantastic. It very much has a Blade Runner vibe to it and I love their vision of the future and the state of technology.

I'll defo be watching another episode, if not two, later tonight and I'll report back tomorrow if it gets better or worse. I highly recommend everyone gives it a go though, just watching 1x01 should get you hooked.

Re: Altered Carbon

It’s good so far (only watched 2 episodes, as I’m limiting myself to one a day).

It’s useful having read the book(s), but that can create a sense of dissonance when it’s different (not bad, as screen adaptations usually differ due to the medium, but "jarring" to the narrative you already know/expect) from the book.

Someone posted this on Twitter - the book’s author (who I follow) "liked" it. I found it amusing.

Re: Altered Carbon

I have all the episodes, but havent got round to watching any yet.

So far, the people I know who have seen at least the first few have been pretty "meh" about it.

Re: Altered Carbon

On enforced bed rest this series has proved a welcome diversion. I really enjoyed all 10 episodes. just wish a new skin were actually possible.

My main complaint and I'm not sure if I'm the only one but I'm struggling to understand what they're saying quite a lot.

I have only seen the first two eps and am going to watch
1x03 later. Despite my previous comparisons, the best and easiest way I can describe this for you is The Expanse. It has the same dark undertones, shows you what is hidden beneath the surface with regards to class and society and is about a loser dude doing an investigation which involves more than you think.

I like it. It isn't great but it is better than pretty much everything else atm. I think I would put it 4th on my list behind Discovery, Greys and Shield.

Re: Altered Carbon

The way the viewer is expected to pick up all the terminology so quick is the only flaw in this series. The explanations were rushed through quickly and then the slang was used so much, if you didn't grab it the first time you are a bit screwed for working out whats being said and thus the ability to follow the story-line suffers.

Quote:
CTAC – Colonial Tactical Assault Corp. A Protectorate force who needlecast into many different sleeves on many different worlds.

DHF – Digital Human Freight. The code that makes up a person’s consciousness – usually stored on a stack.

Dipper – A hacker, specializing in hacking DHF code and stealing memories.

Elders – An extinct alien race.

Envoy – An elite rebel soldier with heightened intuition, senses and reflexes.

Grounders – People who live on the ground, as opposed to the Meths who inhabit Aerium.

Meth – Someone who has achieved immortality by amassing clones and back-ups of their mind. Named after the Biblical figure Methusaleh, who was said to have lived for 969 years.

Multi-sleeve – To have one’s DHF in multiple bodies at once. This is illegal.

Needlecast – To transfer DHF code remotely from one body to another.

Neo-C – Neo-Catholicism. A religion that holds the belief that humans should not be brought back to life after death.

Neo-C coding – Religious coding in a person’s DHF that indicates they do not consent to be placed in a new body upon death. Effectively a “Do Not Resuscitate” order.

Organic damage – Damage to a sleeve, which is viewed more like property damage than real harm.

Portable 3D Bio Organic Printer – A machine for printing clones.

ADVERTISING [X]

Protectorate – The military force of the UN, which maintains order across all the Settled Worlds.

Psychosurgery – A method of repairing DHF that has been damaged by emotional trauma.

Real death – The destruction of a stack, resulting in the obliteration of a person’s consciousness.

Reaper – A drug that can be used in small doses to lower body temperature and dampen emotion, or in high doses to kill.

Resleeving – Putting a stack in a new sleeve.

Settled Worlds – Human-inhabited planets

Simulspace – Virtual reality.

Sleeve – A body.

Sleeve death – When a body is killed, but the stack survives.

Songspire – An alien tree with hanging blue ornaments – a relic of the Elders. No one really knows what they are, but they’re pretty and they make nice sounds.

Spin up – Temporarily put a stack into a new sleeve – for the purposes of questioning, or just to spend time with the person.

Stack – A disk upon which a person’s consciousness is stored. Implanted in everyone when they are a year old.

Stronghold – The home base of the Envoys.

Synthetic sleeve – A silicone-based body that looks perfectly human, but can be enhanced with different abilities.

Other than that, loving the series.

Re: Altered Carbon

A few minor quibbles, purist that I am:

In the novels, the 'Elders' were Martians (although it later becomes apparent that they didn't originate on Mars).

The role of the CTAC was filled by the Envoy Corps. The Corps was created to deal with the difficulties faced by soldiers being needlecast to different worlds, i.e. everything - atmosphere, gravity, local customs etc. etc. - may be totally different from what they're used to...yet they might be expected to fight within hours of arriving with no time to adjust or to assimilate whatever tactical info has been downloaded into the sleeves' stacks.

Envoys don't need that time. Their training concentrates primarily on the mind, not the body (which is only a sleeve in any case and can be grown to be at the peak of physical fitness straight from the tank with no training whatsoever), and it's the pure mind which is cast. To quote Kovacs: 'Not soldiers, no. Not exactly.'

However, I'm not (yet) a Netflix subscriber. So I have to ask: is the series at least reasonably true to the novels? If it isn't, it loses all credibility - and given that a) it touches on the touchy subject of religion and b) there's the kind of extreme violence you'd expect in a world where inflicting serious injury just doesn't mean as much (except to the victim at the time, that is) as it does today...

(Oh, one more thing: are they pronouncing Takeshi's surname correctly, i.e. with the Slavic 'ch' ending rather than a hard s?)

It's not that bad but I can't get past the really bad acting and dodgy dialogue.

Re: Altered Carbon

Suffering Manfluenza so binged on this yesterday. Really enjoyed it, I didnt feel that the acting was spectacular but it certainly wasnt that bad. Struggled with dialogue in the first couple of episodes but once I got into it & turned the volume up a little all was good.
Think I'll find the books, something I'd enjoy reading.
