I would have thought that advances in this area, such as new compression technologies, will ultimately resolve this problem. In addition, I believe that there will be fewer broadcast channels over time in favour of on demand and streaming.

As far as i know Netflix compress their streams with the H265 codec which would explain why the picture looks better than Amazon if there's congestion somewhere.

H265 doesnt neccesarily give better PQ it's just a more efficient codec over say h.264. I'm pretty sure Amazon are using H265 for it's UHD content.

I think Netflix are taking a different approach than Amazon as to how their content in encoded

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)

Changes on Virgin Media between Easter and May Day:

The service name of Motors TV (SID 1602) was changed to motorsport.tv

The service names of STV Glasgow (SID 10140) and STV Edinburgh (SID 10152) were both changed to STV2.

Made in Liverpool (SID 10152) was removed from the Code Download Test (Portsmouth) network.

Service IDs 1514, 1515 and 1519 were testing on Transport Stream 15.

Changes between May Day and the start of this week:

Zee TV (SID 1514), &TV (SID 1515) and Zee Punjabi (SID 1519) were activated on Transport Stream 15, replacing SID's 1106, 1108 and 1109 respectively, which were removed from Transport Stream 11. So channels are being moved around, probably just internal maintenance but possibly an indication that Transport Stream 11 is being reorganised to make way for different channels.

Viceland (SID 1116) was removed from the Network Information Tables of all test networks and from the Service Description Table. Test video and audio streams were removed from across the network. So all traces of Viceland have now been removed. Interesting as it seemed to be at a fairly advanced stage of being added to the network.

STV2 (SID 10140) - the Glasgow version was added to the Code Download Test (Portsmouth) nework. Perhaps the testers were distraught at the earlier removal of Made in Liverpool and got STV2 as compensation. As far as the Solent area in general is concerned, there are still no active tests present for That's Solent on the NIT tables of any of the regional networks.

Made in Teesside (SID 10156) was removed from the NGRHEE Bromley network where the original monitoring/testing appears to have taken place.

Other than that, a few service name changes as a result of channels temporarily re-branding. There were some interesting additional changes noted but no indication of what may develop from these changes, if anything.

Fox News Channel continued to be present in the NIT tables of several of VM's internal networks, used for testing.

Lyon game will be shown on BT Showcase - Info from EPG.
As BT Showcase SD has now closed, you could well be right in that VM will simply simulcast the appropriate feed.

Do we have BT Showcase HD on VM? If not, does anyone have any news as to when/if this will be coming to the platform?

I've noticed on the Virgin Media EPG that the World Service on channel 906 closes down from 23:20 on Wednesday 17 May to 5:59 on Thursday 18 May.

Radio 4, which usually simulcasts the World Service overnight, is broadcasting a documentary series called 'Million Merchant Seafarers' from 1:00 to 5:20 on 18/5/17.

Anyone know what's happening?

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)

As Euronews re-organises, with targeted versions for each audience / language group, the former audio feeds of some of the additional language streams carried on Virgin Media have been removed.

PID's 1622, 1623 and 1624, the former audio streams for the French, German and Spanish language feeds have gone. PID 1611, the English language feed remains.

Service ID 1704: "BTSportHD Hidden" still exists, previously it has been switched into channel 100 on the EPG when live FTA content has been carried on BT Showcase. It's not on the EPG but the clue is in the "Hidden" part of the service name.

Service ID 807: "BT Sport Show" is still in the EPG on channel 548, so the SD version may possibly still be available on VM.

Maintenance? Possibly nothing, I don't really trust the radio section of the EPG. Check again closer to the date, it may change.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)

Interesting, thanks

The online schedule shows things carrying on as normal, it could be a VM only thing eg changing their feed??

Saturday afternoon. BT Sports Showcase on Freeview HD is showing "BT Sport Score". Virgin 548 is showing "channel not currently available".

So it looks like scheduling on the two will be different in future.

I don't think 'BT Sport Score' was ever shown on VM - only the free matches
