Is it wise though? That's a subjective assessment whereas millions is a factual one.

Well game bird season has started and may be plenty of them without needing CO2. Have partridge or pheasant for Christmas.

The three-week arrangement announced by Kwarteng will cover operating costs so the firm can immediately restart its Billingham plant. “This agreement will ensure the many critical industries that rely on a stable supply of CO2 have the resources they require to avoid disruption,” Kwarteng said.

CF is Britain's main CO2 producer and meets 60 percent of its demand, and the deal follows talks between Kwarteng and CF Fertilisers CEO Tony Will over the past couple of days. It will see the company restart production at one of two plants earmarked for closure. The BBC reported the cost to taxpayers is in the "low tens of millions" and is less than Ł50m.

Staff were allowed into the Billingham site on Teesside around 10 p.m. last night after assembling throughout the evening.

The move will also protect the U.K.’s six advanced gas-cooled nuclear reactors, which rely on CO2. Ministers were briefed Tuesday that the reactors were at risk and might have to close.

“These will be three tense weeks while we have to try and work something more long-term out,” a senior civil servant told POLITICO's London Playbook.

You walked into that one, Andrew! Why would you question the Guvmin's wisdom when it is their main duty to protect the well-being of the UK? Running out of food or other products that make use of CO2 is not something that they can allow.

I’m pretty sure nobody on this forum has the slightest idea what it costs to restart and operate a fertiliser factory. How do you judge whether tens of millions is an awful lot of cash in any particular context?

You don't think that's why I used words like Seems like and might have, time will tell but by the time the crisis has passed chumocracy apologists will either hope everyone's forgotten or tell us it was a price worth paying

Re: UK carbon dioxide shortage could ‘cancel Christmas’, warns turkey supplier

El Gov will have to continue subsidising these plants long term while gas prices are stupid as well as subsidising the poor more than the Ł140 warm home discount

keep foreign aid frozen and I know this will get me flamed means test the state pension and throw the money at those most in need

Re: UK carbon dioxide shortage could ‘cancel Christmas’, warns turkey supplier

Part of the problem at the moment is that the major producer of bio-ethanol in the UK plant is down for annual maintainance. They provide approximately 40% of the country's CO2 needs as a by-product. Their representitive was on R4 "You and Yours" today and said they will be restarting production soon.

Probably the reason why El Gov. has time limited support for the fertiser plant.

To call it wise without more knowledge of costs, etc is unwise. It could be the best decision under the sun or it could be another PPE act-in-haste, repent-at-your-leisure scenario.
An alternative point I've seen expressed is: are we giving into corporate strikers? What would Margaret Thatcher have done?

I dispute that, Andrew. The Guvmin's over-riding duty is to protect us. In this case they've acted quickly, which I think is a necessary step.

We didn't know what the Covid cost would be and the Guvmin really didn't act as quickly as hindsight suggested it should have done.

I don't see the relevance of introducing Thatcher into this other than to cause mischief.

Well I was making the same point, although from the opposite end. Those inclined to trust the government will likely assume it’s a fair price. Those inclined to assume it’s all a great big old boys club will assume the price is excessive.

It would be preferable if we had something else to go on other than political prejudices.

Agreed. Knowing what a fair price is, is quite tricky though!

Re: UK carbon dioxide shortage could ‘cancel Christmas’, warns turkey supplier

Everyone in the green camp is complaining we produce too much CO2, and yet at the same time, we are short of CO2.

Everyone was happy with furlogh, costing us billions, and yet complaining about a few millions to get us out of a different 'crisis'.

What a strange world.
