Re: 1Gb Review

Can someone answer the question when will their 500mbb be released for all without the need for a silly bundle?

I don't mean to argue semantics, but all the same the 8gbit trial from before was pure fibre, gig1 is still the same HFC network we all know and love, just upgraded.

you would think it would be soon wouldn't you seeming as though they have already released 1gbit as standalone. You would think they have reached their saturation point with oomph bundle uptake so the only way they are going to get new subscribers/upgrades now is by making it available to all non-bundled tiers.

Re: 1Gb Review

I suspect it's a capacity thing. 1gbit is only available in 3.1 areas, but I imagine 500mbit is pushing the capacity of the 3.0 network.

I wouldn't be surprised if stand-alone 500Mbit didn't come along until more areas were 3.1 enabled - and it'd come with a 3.1 Hub.

Re: 1Gb Review

Yeah, it shouldnt take much longer. I think they were moving 20mbit customers over to 3.0 six months after 50mbits launched.

The online postcode checker still has my street down as 200Mb though it used to show 350Mb and I believe 500Mb and I am on the 500Mb speed, so I am guessing it is a capacity issue.

Re: 1Gb Review

The area I have moved to recently (new build) was limited to 200Mb but is now 350Mb. I assume 500 and the rest will come eventually at some point.

Re: 1Gb Review

Openreach at the entrance to my estate pulling fibre through the main ducts in preparation for FTTP. Allegedly BT Wholesale will be dropping the 1gb price to something fairly reasonable in the next few months.

Actual competition!

I'm waiting for OR to do the same, hopefully. Annoyingly when I look at the coverage map, I am surrounded by places with G.fast and FTTP plans (and literally on the edge of one) but my exact area has nothing. I'm hoping it'll be soon.

I think your memory is lapsing again, Max. 50Mbit was launched at the end of 2008, as the first 3.0 service but the great migration to 3.0 (Which was marketed as speed doubling) was 2012. That's when 20meg moved "for free" to 30meg and required users to get upgraded to a 3.0 device.

you are partly correct, I remember quite vividly posting about it at the time and I remember that within 6 months of 50mbit being released that despite being advertised as stm free, they introduced stm on the tier because they were migrating 20mbits customers across as well which was going to place more load on the network. Luckily the existing subscribers were immune for another 9 months or so I think before it was inflicted upon us.

I have done a quick search to see if I can find any of my posts from the time talking about it and I have found one from March 2009. From the sounds of it they were moving 20mbit customers onto docsis 2.0 because 1.0 was at breaking point.
