Sadly very depressing and sadly very predictable...

So is this

Quote:
One person has died and at least nine others are injured after a knife attack in the suburbs of the French city of Lyon.
Officials have confirmed several people were attacked as they waited for a bus near the Laurent-Bonnevay metro station in Villeurbanne, to the east of the city, shortly after 4:30pm local time (3:30pm BST).
Of the nine people injured, three are in a critical condition. The one fatality was a 19-year-old man, reportedly from the nearby Isère region.
...
Police have since confirmed the man to be a 33-year-old from Afghanistan, who is currently seeking asylum.
And this sort of thing has always been going on, but all without much comment.

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A woman is dead and three others injured after an early morning quadruple shooting inside a northeast Baltimore home. Around 3:13 a.m. Friday, an officer was flagged down by a person in the 1600 block of East 29th Street.

BALTIMORE (WBFF)-- Baltimore City Police are investigating after more than a dozen people were shot in the city.
From 1am Friday, until 3am Monday, 13 people including a 12-year-old boy were shot in the city. Six have died.

Quite. And just think how many of those nine injured people would be dead if the attacker had had easy access to a firearm, rather than a knife.

As for Baltimore, well as Pip says, so many firearms deaths in the USA have become routine that they barely get mentioned. You have to gun down a lot of people to get on the news these days.

Like in Paris 2015?

Shootings and bomb blasts left 130 people dead and hundreds wounded, with more than 100 in a critical condition.
One dead but could end up being more. From previous Lyon attack link.

A teenage girl who became one of the most notorious gangsters in her city was herself gunned down in a gruesome attack.
Gakirah Barnes boasted about "killing 17 people" and amassed an army of social media followers.
Her bloodthirsty lifestyle helped Gakirah become one of the most infamous female gang members in American history.
Killing 17 people gets mass supports from certain quarters.
Be responsible for hundreds of deaths and you get Hollywood stars supporting you.

Re: Yet another shooting in the US

I love the smell of whataboutery in the morning.

If you’re going to attempt to build an argument that this sort of thing can totally happen anywhere (to the extent that this latest Texas shooting isn’t remarkable, or perhaps even that the USA doesn’t have the problem we all like to think it does) then you need to post statistics, not whatever news item comes top of a google search.

Re: Yet another shooting in the US

Let us not forget the comparison of gun deaths per 100,000 citizens.

https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsan...m-gun-violence

U.K. 0.06 per 100,000
USA 4.43 per 100,000

The USA has 74 times the number of gun deaths per 100,000 citizens compared to the U.K..

Also, knife murders are also higher stateside: there were 4.96 homicides “due to knives or cutting instruments” in the US for every million of population in 2016. In Britain there were 3.26 homicides involving a sharp instrument per million people in the year from April 2016 to March 2017.

Re: Yet another shooting in the US

If people are going to kill, they will use whatever weapons they can.
For example there have been 90 knife related deaths in London in 2019.
Has everyone of them been newsworth ? No.

Even if you could somehow magically remove all access to guns in the US, murders would still continue.
Its people that kill, if they cannot use one weapon, they will use another instead.

Re: Yet another shooting in the US

People kill people. People with semi-automatic combat weapons kill more people more quickly and easily than people with kitchen knives.

People with trucks and cars plow into crowds and kill more.
The London killers a few months ago did a pretty good job with knives.

Simply saying the problem is "Guns" is simplistic nonsense.
I know plenty of people in the UK that own a semi automatic rifle and yet somehow manage not to kill anyone.
