And in military colors

Ah! Those were the days when the attendant actually came out and refuelled your plane. None of the self service they have now.

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

Question for you lot..

Just had a small jet (circa late 40's <> 50's) fly over head..

Size was about the same as a provost, swept back wings, twin engine (under wing nacelles) and likely to be based/visiting Duxford as it came from that direction..

Any ideas??

---------- Post added at 14:12 ---------- Previous post was at 14:09 ----------

Just wondering if it was underwing engines and not tanks instead.. In that case it could have been a Hawker Hunter

More like too fast overhead, 400mph at VFR level doesn;t give you a lot of time

even if it's wrong this is worth the link for such a great pic of a truly elegant aircraft.

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

hmm could be quite a few jets that are towards the discription.... my guess is that it could be a F-80 shooting star as the other guess is a ME262 but dont know if any of those are still in flying conditions

---------- Post added at 17:28 ---------- Previous post was at 17:19 ----------

just had a look at Duxford and some other sites and cant find any airshows with vintage jets on them for around this weekend.

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

Duxford is used as a private field for those with vontage aircraft quite often.

I'd say that it definately wasn't a meteor/me262 (wings were more swept) and that it was more like the Hunter with the drop tanks

Could you tell if the nacelles were fabbed into the wing surface or if they were on pylons?

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

There are the Supermarine Swift or Scimitar, which are similar to the Hunter, but I don't know if any are airworthy?

Could it have been American - e.g. an F86 Sabre?

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

De Havilland aviation are operating a Hunter and a Gnat out of Bournemouth so if what you saw were ferry tanks Kymmy it could possibly have been one of those. The gnat is in red arrows colours though so I guess you would have mentioned if it was that.

I wondered about whether it could have been a Gnat, but Kymmy seemed sure it was an older 'plane.

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

definately not a gnat... The paintwork was a light color (blue or silver)..

Definately Hunter shape/size

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

Hubby suggests an F86 Sabre as there is one based at Duxford.

Apparently it quite regularly displays at Old Waden. The evening Battle of Britain flight-show is this Saturday and not too far from you!
