Well deserved and IMO the first that has been earned in recent times.

Re: Captain Tom Moore to be knighted after raising £33m for NHS
Obvs a wonderful honour - well deserved.
I have a question, though. He was made an honorary Colonel by his regiment. Yet his official title will be Captain Sir Thomas Moore. Why can't he use the Colonel handle? Seems pointless otherwise. And I hope his pension rises to Colonel's pension level.

He can use it but doesn't want to.
"I'm still Captain Tom, that's who I really am but if people choose to call me colonel, well, thank you very much."

I doubt very much you're given the choice of how to be addressed, this sort of thing is steeped in tradition and etiquette and if I had to hazard a guess it'd be that ceremonial ranks are non applicable

It explained it on the news yesterday, that due to it being an honorary Colonel title that his official title would be Captain Sir Tom Moore.

A very humble man. Good luck to him a lot of people could learn a lot from him.

Mod note - thread title amended for accuracy; the money raised is going to NHS Charities Together, not the NHS.

The actual amount is closer to £40m when you add gift aid

Really ? A knighthood ?
What he raised is fantastic, but all he did was walk around a garden.
The rest is really down to luck - the media picked up on him very early, and thus it snow-balled wildly.
Great job yes, fantastic amount of money, but deserving of a knighthood, I dont really think so.

We all know what you mean, but when you look at many others on the gravy train who have been knighted .....

He walked around a garden at 99yrs of age. I hope you can do that when you get there. At least he has earned the respect of the nation.
How many others who have been Knighted have actually done that?

Physically 'all he did' was walk around his garden.
Mentally/spiritually. At a time when many people are suffering and/or struggling with the current situation he gave them something to smile about, be happy about and be proud about.
He showed people the world over how one 'ordinary' person can make such a significant difference to the lives of others.
