The BBC1 SD regional channel (the North West version is what is covered by DBR, so it may not affect other BBC1 SD regional versions on equivalent multiplex elsewhere) has switched to MPEG4.
Also, on the same multiplex, there is a New Sans Nom with HD resolution. It appears to be the same channel. So apparently BBC1 North West is going HD.
Given BBC1 has about 17 (vague recollection, it may be a slightly different number) versions and only 4(?) have a HD version because the BBC can't afford to convert them all at once, this won't be happening for them all on VM any time soon.
|
I see an new copy of that channel has appeared on DBR today.
The BBC North West one (That one appeared on Thursday) may launch in HD as soon as Thursday*.
*Base on past channel launches Virgin can launch an channel an week after testing appearing. No EPG is broadcasting (at time of posting) on the BBC One North West so called HD Channel so it may not even launch.

Re: Channels switched to MPEG4
I saw. I posted on Coming Soon this morning. I'm currently of the opinion it's just network housekeeping by VM based on Forumbox comments, they have consolidations of regional services that can potentially be all be put on one multiplex if I understand what was being said correctly.

Re: Channels switched to MPEG4
Maybe nothing but we have found that "SptsETVmain" testing on CO32 is also testing with EPG saying: "18h00>00h00 Red Button interactive"

Follow the link to Forumbox that was on Media Boy's last post on the Coming Soon thread. It has a little bit more. But it's nothing conclusive. Yet.
Short version (as I understand it): It's either something new, or something existing and some housekeeping to simplify the network at VM's end.

Re: Channels switched to MPEG4
Digital Bit Rate is reporting that Virgin Media UK has add an new channel called BT Sport 1 HD on CO65 but channel is NOT broadcasting in HD or MPEG4.
But the old BT Sport 1 HD on Channel 527 is still broadcasting on HD Stream CO77.
Also an other new Channel has added to CO75 called E! HD we feel it will launch beside Prime Video on Channel 229.

Except that there is no new BT Sport 1 HD. So which stream BT Sport 1 HD is broadcasting from is completely irrelevant to viewers.
Except....'it is not broadcasting in HD....'
I think we can safely ignore this.
The addition of E! HD is good, though, but not a channel I ever watch personally.

It'll probably just be testing. They seem to use any old channel to test streams and load, not necessarily from the broadcaster of the ultimate channel they are going to be launching. And if there is nothing launching imminently it could be network stress/load testing.
---------- Post added at 09:40 ---------- Previous post was at 09:17 ----------
For instance, on Tsid35/CO35 one of the Sans Noms is now called Dummy. And it's carrying Sony Max HD, another channel that is broadcast already on VM.
And the other odd thing about that BT Sport HD 1 is that it's on the multiplex with the recently switched off Sky Cinema SD channels. And the bitrate is MUCH MUCH higher than a normal SD channel, even one in MPEG2.
And for another thing the current screengrab seems to be of two policemen with their faces blurred out. Not something you'd see on a sports channel. In fact I can just about make out a Pick logo in the top left amongst the blur.

Since posting DBR reports early on we have found that Forum Box is reporting the same.
We go to DBR right away when we log on. when other pages.

Re: Channels switched to MPEG4
Now that E! HD has started testing, following the latest agreement between Sky and VM, maybe they will add the 'missing' +1 services like Sky One +1, Sky Arts +1, Pick +1 and E! +1. They already have Sky Witness +1, Real Lives +1 and Challenge +1.

Re: Channels switched to MPEG4
As things are moving over to HD - there would be little point in adding SD channels.

Virgin Media don't seem to agree. It's only recently that they've added True Entertainment +1.

I was under impression that had been there a while, and at the latest arriving during the UKTV dispute. The oldest Channel Guide pdf I have is April this year so I can't be certain though.

The True Entertainment Wikipedia page says +1 launched on VM on 21st July 2018 , same channel number.
