Believe me I am eternally grateful for all the help I have received from CF members over the years including yours thenry, and should I decide at a future date to have another crack at the upgrade I truly hope you and others will once again be there to assist.

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
I had another go or two or three.
I detached all USB devices apart from my wireless keyboard and mouse, uninstalled all anti-virus software, up dated as many drivers as far aspossible, performed a clean boot and after everything had downloaded, following advice, I disconnected the network cable.
As usual the installation fell over after the first reboot at 30% giving no reason.
Things I haven't done include disconnecting my addition internal hard drives and using an iso disc.
Incidentally I did a pre-installation check for Windows 8.1 which is supposed to cover many of the possible Windows 10 issues. It found no compatibility issues that might affect installation.
My final, and this time I mean final, attempt will be with an iso disc. No way am I disconnecting my internal hard drives. If MS cannot come up with an upgrade process better than this they should be ashamed. I know it is a free upgrade, but they have a duty of care to all those non-savvy computer users out there.
BTW windows 10 installed with no problems onto my son's i7 laptop, from 8.1.

Not sure how relevant it is but try updating the bios for the motherboard.
Loads of reports that unplugging Sata drives/dvd optical drives fixes the freezing for some people so try that.

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
Could it be related to this?
Windows 10: broken update forces some users into endless reboot loop
Quote:
“It downloads, reboot to install. Gets to 30% and reboots. Gets to 59% and reboots. Gets to 59% again and then states something went wrong so uninstalling the update. Wait a few minutes and reboot. Back to login screen,” said Microsoft forum user BrettDM. “This happens without fail, every single time.”
|
Are you using a Nvidia graphics card? Apparently their update process uses a dummy user account. An entry in the registry about user profiles may mess with win 10 installation. The registry entries contain a directory that doesn't exist, ie C:\Users\UpdatusUser.
I'm preparing to upgrade to win 10 and my win 8.1 registry has 2 user profiles entries like that.

Reading the above helpful comments it appears to me that MS has messed up here. We had few of these problems with previous upgrades.
SnoopZ. Yes my bios is up-to-date. It is absolutely shocking that MS have taken us to a point where I need to disconnect all my internal peripherals including, NomadKing, my Nvidia graphics card. I am resentful of having to do so. What happens to the millions of folk out there who are not computer savvy?
