Exactly, if they'd concentrated on updating the oily bits instead of mucking about with the bodywork we'd all be much happier.

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

I've not really seen a difference between XP-7-8 and 10 other than windows 10 is a lot more complicated when it comes to using it's internals and not as user friendly as the rest

The main desktop PC with the 1803 update can see and access all the shared files on the laptop but the laptop now cannot see the main PC or printer.????

You are 100% correct. I was classed as a dev/reporter on their next OS at the time code named Longhorn.(I had nothing to do with dev but reported on problems). That OS became Windows 7.0 which was not fit for purpose on release M/S didn't listen but, they had to get a new OS out. They soon followed it up with SP1 to solve the problems we'd reported. It was, to all intents and purposes XP with a different UI.

I still have a Longhorn install disc knocking about somewhere.

Vista, what a joke, they were aiming at Windows 10 then! They had to issue a sevice pack and guess what it was. It put XP OS back under the hood just as they did with Windows 7.

Windows 10 is a totally different beast. I won't give it house room now as I can see what they are aiming for. When W7 updates cease I'll go Linux.

I think you're confusing Vista and Windows 7 there?

If I remember correctly the original Longhorn was scrapped, and development restarted for Vista on a branch of the latest Windows Server code available - which is why it then felt like XP with a different skin.

Windows 7 then 'fixed' Vista - some of which was just waiting for the hardware and tech companies to catch up with what Microsoft were doing e.g. WDDM.

These things, in conjunction with the fact that many of Microsoft's most skilled developers and engineers had been working on Windows Server 2003, led to the decision to "reset" development of Longhorn, building on the same code that would become Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, instead of the older Windows.NET Server Release Candidate 1 (Build 3663).

Same here

In fact I already play about with various Linux versions on a 12 year old laptop.

Now cast your mind back and think about the specs of a 12 year old laptop, and then smile when Ubuntu Studio (for example) instals flawlessly, picks up the wifi, has no graphics or audio problems, and works perfectly.

When I can no longer play the games I want on Win 7 I'll be going totally Linux and buying a console for gaming

edit: . . . and have you seen what comes as standard with Ubuntu Studio . . . for free

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

Personally I think they should have taken a leaf from the Linux book and allow updated to run in without all those reboots. This would have been a big change to the gubbins and how libraries work but not necessarily how code is written, just how it's built.

Then have the libraries and applications separate so, like Linux you don't have to have quite so much crud installed with every app. But that would be harder as dev's would need to ensure compatibility.

This happened to me on all 3 pcs and 2 laptops, all homegroups were deleted and i had to reset all the network up again.

I'd say linux is completely viable now unless you need games or MS office (and libreoffice isn't good enough).

I don't need games and M?S Office is not critical but I am photoshop user.

That said I could always use W7 in a VM on Linux and run CS6 from there.
Obviously between now and end of support I'll get around to having Linux as a dual boot option so I can get used to it, set up the VM and see how it goes.
