I don't remember anyone saying that...

Really?
I remember reading quite a few politician types from different countries saying we should give them a chance because they've 'turned the corner' and other such phrases.
There are always those in society that will plead for another chance to be given to the offender with 168 previous offences . .

I remember this, but nothing about them "turning a corner"…

Quote:
'It is entirely right for us to be extremely suspicious [of the Taliban] and go on what evidence we've got," General Nick Carter said.
"But again, we would be silly, I think, if we didn't give them a chance".
The military chief said the Taliban, who regained control of Afghanistan in less than a month after Western forces left, should be given "a bit of space to see whether or not they're going to govern in a less repressive, more reasonable, and more inclusive way".
He added: "It may be that they will."

The Taliban have banned hairdressers in Afghanistan's Helmand province from shaving or trimming beards, saying it breaches their interpretation of Islamic law.
Anyone violating the rule will be punished, Taliban religious police say.
Some barbers in the capital Kabul have said they also received similar orders.
The instructions suggest a return to the strict rulings of the group's past tenure in power, despite promises of a milder form of government.

If they ban everything how are they going to make money/living and keep everyone out of poverty?

No doubt the humanitarian brigade will throw money, food, clothing etc at them . . . not saying that's a bad thing, but it just ends up supporting the Taliban regime by allowing them to carry on as they are instead of them having to change

There's no ideal solution to the current crisis. Without aid they will probably leave the country in greater numbers than they are already doing and end up in refugee camps in neighbouring countries and doubtless people will be unhappy too when some then cross the channel into England.

….. which was the perceived problem of the huge influx from the EU - they spoke English rather than French.

There were some interesting testimonies shared recently about Afghanistan from US generals. They said that keeping just 2,500 troops on the ground would have prevented the collapse of the government.
I'm sure the UK and its remaining allies wouldn't find this a prohibitive number.
Quote:
Two top US military officials said they believed that a few thousand troops should have remained in Afghanistan and acknowledged other tactical and intelligence failings during the chaotic withdrawal of armed forces from the country.
During testimony before the Senate armed services committee on Tuesday, Mark Milley, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, and Frank McKenzie, US commander of troops in the region, both made clear their personal views were at odds with the decision President Joe Biden took to withdraw all troops by his September 11 deadline.
“My view is that 2,500 was an appropriate number to remain, and if we went below that number in fact we would probably witness a collapse in the Afghan government and in the Afghan military,” McKenzie said in testimony, in comments echoed by Milley.

Re: Parliament to be recalled re: Taliban in Afghanistan
Well that's what Military Generals are good at, pushing for 'their boys' to be in the thick of it and waiting for the honors to roll in
Blair was pretty good at it too as I recall

.... whereas Boris is a fail. He would only want the honours to fall on himself. He is not a credible PM.

There's no credible opposition either . . . although that nice Mr Kim Jong-un fella could work . . can we get him in?
