Re: Windows 11

Windows 8.1 is actually still supported, until Jan 2023.

If you disable the kiddy blocks etc, and install classic menu, its much like running W7.

(I still run Windows 7, but my wife has a W8 laptop, set up as above).

Likewise, the lappy stays on W7 and the desktop is still on XP SP3. No need to change something that is fine as it is.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Next OS will likely be a Linux offshoot.

Re: Windows 11

If I wasn't a Mac user I would upgrade. Doesn't seem a lot wrong with the new OS, even if I find it a bit unambitious in many ways, so long as I can move the start menu back to the left.

I wonder what the TPM requirement means for VMs?

Re: Windows 11

Just upgraded from W7 to W10 at work. It'll be a decade before they try W11. Quite right too, let everyone else sort the crap out first.

This raises a valid issue and something I have been thinking about.

It seems to be a pattern now where software is beta tested as a sold product under the guide of early access. With them starting with the flighting release next week and soft release target of November for RTM that is only 5 months testing. I do not see how they can mass test and release a polished product in this timeframe.

That will not stop me using it but can understand those wary of it

Re: Windows 11

They did a gradual "upgrade" at my place, as we got new laptops, they came with W10 on them.

Re: Windows 11

It’s not just processors, it’s motherboards as well - I have an i7-9700K processor (9th Gen), but an Asrock Z370M Pro4 motherboard, and the checker says my system won’t support Win11.

I’m assuming there’s a setting on the Motherboard where I can enable Secure Boot, so I’ll have a look for that…

TPM needs to be enabled

A quick google tells me the board has a header for a TPM Module

edit again it also tells me you have it already in the bios. Look for Trusted Computing, I have an Asrock TaiChi and that is what it is called on that

Bios/ Security/ Intel Platform Trust Technology Enable

I stayed with a solid Vista machine until last year. No security updates, sites not supporting it, and software not supporting it finally made me move to a new Win10 machine.
