8 New cities in the UK
https://news.sky.com/story/platinum-...tions-12616934
As a part of the Platinum Jubilee, 8 new cities have been announced.
One question, why Milton Keynes?
My town was the birthplace of Fibre optics.
Plus its on every blooming day of my local news when its not even local!

Re: 8 New cities in the UK
Essex got Colchester, why should they get Harlow as well?
Milton Keynes village(yes there is one there) is not big enough to justify being a town, never mind a city.

Re: 8 New cities in the UK
Well Harlow's biggest claim is the late Rik Mayall was born here, that alone should let us use Royal in the name

They have changed the rule that a city had to have a cathedral.

Re: 8 New cities in the UK
Wonder if anyone gets demoted from being a city ? I'd demote Leeds on account of they're getting relegated anyway

The only interest I had in this was to go on google Earth and look at The Falklands

Well that changed a while back

What about cathedrals?
Historically, cities were settlements with a cathedral, and those places remain cities. Therefore, many settlements that are now comparatively small, such as Ely, Wells, or Salisbury, have long had city status. A cathedral is not a requirement for city status to be conferred, though Birmingham was the first town without a cathedral to become a city, in 1889.

That was never a rule. Leeds has never had a cathedral.
It, in more modern times, was measured on the Central Business District.

Which is a shame, it's a nice clear rule and has some interesting results. St David's for example.
