Why should we care? There would have been non-lethal fun to be had.

She would have disrupted EU/European efforts to support Ukraine (France having already sent 100 million Euros of Military equipment there) - that might have lethal consequences for Ukrainians…

Would, might .... Nothing that we and the US cannot make up.
Well worth the price of throwing the EU into confusion and disarray.

France is a pretty big contributor to NATO and she would have pulled out France from its 'command structure meaning NATO couldn't call upon them. That's a pretty big commitment for us to make up alone. And yes she would probably reduce arms to Ukraine and be softer on Russia. Throwing into the air the defensive alliance that has protected Europe for decades at a time it's needed more than any other since the cold war would not be 'worth it'.

There is a reason she found it easy to get loans from Russia.

You're so keen to burn down the EU house you don't seem to care if the fire spreads to our own.

In my judgement EU chaos is not the same as the NATO case. Previously France wasn't in NATO and that didn't matter; it won't matter if they leave NATO. The NATO alliance will stand and be augmented by Finland and Sweden.

France is a pretty big member of NATO. It would matter if they left. Even before they left last time they were at least still aligned with Western Interests. Le Pen could well have changed that.

Anyway, it's academic now. She lost pretty comfortably. I am interested to see what a lot of Macron's rivals do now. Does the left unite into a block? With Le Pen face internal challenges after this election? What will the Republicans and Socialists do after getting hardly any votes this time?

It'll still be fun because Boris & co have the Brexit squabbles still to sort out.

Hero's welcome for Macron

Macron pelted with tomatoes as French fury erupts at President just DAYS after re-election
EMMANUEL MACRON was hit with tomatoes in an angry crowd as he visited Cergy, in the northwestern suburb of Paris.

Seeing as less than a quarter of the population actively chose him from the first round, and in the second round it was either him or a crypto-fascist, this is not very surprising. He was very much the hold-your-nose-and-vote-for-me candidate.

That is not an unusual result in a French presidential election though because of the round system. Macron is not unusually unpopular for a French president. In fact, he is unusual in winning the first round despite being the sitting President.

He is not popular of course but French Presidents rarely are. The UK press seems to be trying to paint a story of a pro-EU president under siege but he isn't unpopular because of that, he is unpopular because of a package of economic reforms these papers would otherwise be supporting. The UK is seeing this via a prism that few in France are voting on.
