It seems strange that Natural History content was used to showcase HD in the early days and that we have now reached the stage where the HD version of a Natural History channel has been removed.

There's a lot of speculation around at the moment and ultimately, we'll see how any reorganisation of the channel structure at UKTV affects us as VM TV users.

Of course, the genre is niche and doesn't attract a large audience. It's possible that Sky doesn't want to pay a share of subscription revenue to a competitor and would prefer to attract Eden viewers to the Nat Geo Wild channel, which is within the News Corporation/Fox family. Compare this with the recent situation where Sky reduced support for the Discovery group of channels.

Just seen a response to the post on the Sky forum about Eden HD closing. Sky are claiming its not them that's responsible for it, & is telling customers to contact UKTV

It's an open platform, any channel can be on there as long as it pays the EPG fee. Ultimately it is a decision for UKTV, that's not to say that Sky hasn't forced their hand by reducing the share of subscription revenue paid to the channel. Either way, I wouldn't expect Sky to take responsibility for the removal.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)

This will happen more and more in my opinion , Discovery was the start of it however customers weren't happy at that and Sky agreed a deal.

Any of the channels receiving subscription money from Sky will be reviewed when contracts expire , I'm sure if they feel a certain channel isn't performing well with viewers they'll look to renegotiate or drop the channel.

We have been saying within Media Boy HQ for years now that the Eden brand is dead in the water.

we feel the following may happen.

-Eden HD > Home HD (Rumours to be GOLD HD)
-Eden > Drama +1
-Eden > Really +1

Virgin Media did sign deal with UKTV in June 2016.

http://mediaboyblog.blogspot.co.uk/2...es-virgin.html

Eden HD did launch on September 27th 2011 on Virgin Media UK:

Can anybody help where is the UKTV app

“We’re delighted to be building on our leadership by giving our customers more UKTV shows than are available on any other platform. With the arrival of the UKTV Play app and the doubling of catch-up content our customers can access more of the entertainment they love in the way they want.”

A very good point that I hadn't considered. I think that the days of Sky willy waving about the number of channels that they have (particularly in HD) could well be over in favour of boosting the number of viewers for the channels that they own or have a financial interest in.

I wonder if the fact that Malone now has a 50% stake in UKTV is of any significance. He may have orchestrated this to reduce competition to his Discovery channel's??

Exactly.

Yup, that seems to be the way that it's going. The cost of the football rights, the extra competition that now exists and the apparent plateauing of their subscriber base is clearly affecting Sky.

Eden HD is still broadcasting at present off the Sky EPG.

The new label that is expected to become GOLD HD isn't currently broadcasting anything, but the EPG is now showing a full 7 day EPG for GOLD.

Eden HD continues to be available on VM. Is this now a VM exclusive, or do any other platforms carry it?

I take your point, but it's a fact that what happens on other platforms (particularly Sky) often has implications for VM and it's customers.

Good find; this looks to be about horse riding as opposed to cycling.

It had crossed my mind that it could have been a more imaginatively titled porn channel

Absolutely agree with this,
on the otherhand although not ideal until pic quality improves TV Player are a good alternative they are getting more channels too their latest beine Ginx esports tv strangely tv player is the only platform offering ginxtv on demand content too. Sky nor VM don't have ginxtv on demand.

If I remember correctly, we don't have the UKTV app as such, but we have all the channels from there listed separately (W, Dave, etc) under both Catch Up and On Demand.

That can be said of pretty much any niche channel, they aren't going to attract a large number of viewers. Pay tv is supposed to increase choice by making such content available, even when it doesn't have a large audience. Maybe the problem is too many channels offering similar niche content.

I had considered that but it's maybe a little early in the day for Malone to be influencing events before the acquisition is complete. No doubt further consolidation will follow, subject to BBC approval. Food Network and Good Food also seem to be competing for the same audience for much of the time.

True.

Re: Eden low viewing figures. I don't think that their daft renaming excercise will have helped Eden to reach its target audience either. If I was interested in gardening and quickly going through the EPG I don't think that Eden would be enough of a prompt to make me connect the channel with the subject matter.
