Slow connection on second PC-linksys

Just upgraded my STB to a samsung STB and got the free 2mb upgrade.
Using the linksys befsr41 router..when both computers are connected the first PC is dl'ing and surfing full speed, however my second PC is only dl'ing at approx dial up speeds.
The samsung box seems fine as when connecting each computer on it's own into the STB the speeds are great (without router).

Any ideas how i can share the speeds equally between both PCs?

ps..I have upgraded the firmware, reset all boxes etc.

Re: Slow connection on second PC-linksys

You need 'QoS' - Quality of Service - in the router and afaik the befsr41 doesn't support QoS. QoS basically guarantees the available bandwidth for services or ports.

Googling on 'befsr41 qos' suggests there may be unofficial QOS enabled firmware, but I wouldn't risk it myself.

HTH

Thanks for the reply but what i don't understand is the router worked flawlessly when i had my 750k connection to the old black STB...now its 2mb the problems have started.

Re: Slow connection on second PC-linksys

Have you tried running a speed test on each system, connected through the router, when the other is idle. Then compare that with speed tests when the other is downloading.

Also, what is doing the downloading? If it is something like bittorrent it may have been throttled before and now it isn't?

Re: Slow connection on second PC-linksys

Thanks..the speeds are;

1st pc in router on its own - full speeds
2nd pc in router on its own - fullspeeds

1st pc in STB on its own - full speeds
2nd pc in STB on its own - full speeds

both pc's in router
1st pc - full speed
2nd pc - dial up speeds approx

using a news reader to determine DL speeds (both ntl and 3rd party servers) both show same speed differences.
Seems like the router isn't sharing out the bandwidth equally for some reason?

Would it be better buying a new router? If so, shich would definitely work?

Was the 1st PC idle when you tested the second?

Have you tried swapping ports on the router, eg plug PC1 into port 2 and PC2 into port 1 and repeat the test?

Also what happens if you kick off a large d/l on PC2 and THEN start another d/l on PC1? Does PC2 slow down or does PC1 run slowly?

As for QOS, officially the only Linksys supported Cable Router with QOS is the eight port BEFSR81.

Re: Slow connection on second PC-linksys

Thanks yes I have tried all combinations of ports etc and left each pc idle etc to double check everything.
I will take a look at that router you mentioned..hopefully it will be able to share the bandwidth equally.

Re: Slow connection on second PC-linksys

Found a temporary solution by using Netlimiter on the first PC.
