TalkTalk Broadband Router Problem
A work colleague of mine has TalkTalk broadband set up through a 3com wireless router.
It's worked perfectly for months, then suddenly he lost the internet connection & got 404s all the time. He did a factory reset on the router & now has a strange problem...
The PC communicates with the router in as much that it gets an IP address & picks up the gateway as 198.162.1.1. However, you can't ping the router or access the interface via IE.
I suspected a firewall problem, but (a) he says he hasn't changed anything (b) XP firewall is disabled & (c) even when the TalkTalk firewall is set to 'allow all' the problem persists.
Does anyone have any ideas?
TIA
Cobby

Re: TalkTalk Broadband Router Problem
has he re input his user details as the reset would have blanked these. Now I had a customer on Talktalk who lost net connection and Talktalk in there wisdom had changed his password unilaterally might be worth asking

Re: TalkTalk Broadband Router Problem
Thanks Zing, but he can't even ping the router or access its web interface. Think he should be able to do that even if his details aren't in the router?

Re: TalkTalk Broadband Router Problem
oh yes I stopped reading lol has it been powercycled? does the pc just have one nic to try?
Could try uninstalling the nic in cp and then either allowing windows to reinstall it or install new drivers

Re: TalkTalk Broadband Router Problem
Will ask about system restore.
Power, Sync & WLAN lights are stable. Obviously Online isn't as it doesn't have his ID/password set up...
Thanks for your input!

Re: TalkTalk Broadband Router Problem
Spose so, but it's giving him an IP address, DNS etc... Just can't connect to router interface!
Think I'll try & investigate TalkTalk firewall a bit more....

Re: TalkTalk Broadband Router Problem
Well, turned out to be a rogue copy of Sygate PF that he'd forgotten about....
Somehow it had removed it's tray icon & startmenu entries & turned itself on! No access to it's config interface or anything...
Found it as smc.exe in running processes which gave me a clue, then searched for & ran the msi file to uninstall it...
Weird!
