UKTV secures additional DTT slot.

UKTV has confirmed today that it has secured a deal for a fourth DTT channel slot.

Dave Ja Vu, a catch up service for entertainment channel Dave, will hold Freeview channel 25 for a limited time from January 2013 while UKTV firms up permanent plans for the channel 25 slot.

I know a lot of people that would love UKTV to add Gold to their Freeview lineup. Can't see them doing that myself, but you never know.

Re: UKTV secures additional DTT slot.

I know a lot of people that would like them to add stuff to Freesat before they add any more to Freeview. I'm assuming that this additional channel will be missing from all the UK's "Freeview Lite" fill-in transmitters?

Re: UKTV secures additional DTT slot.

Channels won't be added to one of the PSB Mux Chris. These are reserved for BBC, ITV, CH4 & 5 use only, & are already at capacity anyway. Also you're unlikely to see any UKTV channels on Freesat due to rights issues, as the channels would be receivable outside the UK.

Re: UKTV secures additional DTT slot.

Additional spot beam capacity on Astra 2E, F and G should address that over the next couple of years. 2F is already in orbit and poised to take permanent duties from 1N before the end of this year.

I'm aware that there are rights issue complications involved in free-to-air satellite broadcast but all the PSB broadcasters have overcome them and UKTV's apparent lack of willingness to do the same is seriously at odds with the ad campaign they've been running lately, suggesting that Dave is about to take over the world. I pointed this out to them in a recent email complaining that I was missing Red Dwarf.

Re: UKTV secures additional DTT slot.

Also depends how much income they are getting from Sky subs. Stands to reason they can't be on a Sky subscription pack & have the same channel FTA on Freesat.

Dave is FTA on satellite anyway, so is manually tuneable on a Freesat receiver.

So far as I can see, you're the only person who thinks so. Have you ever seen Dave on a Freesat box in manual tune, 'non-Freesat' mode? All the other information I have ever found on this subject says Dave is encrypted, as it should be if a Sky card is required to view it.

Re: UKTV secures additional DTT slot.

Had a list telling me it was FTA at the beginning of the year. However, it's showing as being on the Sky Entertainment pack now, so not only a card but a subscription is required. That's crafty. Get it free through Freeview, but if you happen to have Sky you're paying for it as well!

Re: UKTV secures additional DTT slot.

I may be being biased (I love food) so I would fancy Good Food on DTT. Or when Sky Sports and ESPN are removed from DTT, maybe Gold and Home could use their hours and expand their current broadcasting hours. About time Freeview had a specialist home and gardening channel or a comedy channel. I like Only Fools and all the old BBC comedies. Here are some links you may be interested in:

Also, if Top Up TV close down soon (which I think they will), then there will be more space on the multiplexes for Freeview to expand their channel offering.

Re: UKTV secures additional DTT slot.

Broadcast: UKTV may launch Best of channels for that new Freeview Slot.

UKTV is also expected to announce its fourth Freeview channel in the coming weeks. The slot is currently being filled with Dave Ja Vu, a +1 version of its male-skewing entertainment channel, and one option would be a best-of-UKTV channel akin to Sky’s Pick TV on Freeview.
