I think you are talking about War Of The Worlds 28TH Oct- 18th Nov.

When astronomers detect a transmission from another galaxy, it is definitive proof of intelligent extra-terrestrial life. Earth's population waits for further contact with bated breath, but does not have to wait long. Within days, mankind is all but wiped out, with just pockets of humanity are left in an eerily deserted world. As alien ships appear in the sky, the survivors ask a burning question - who are these attackers and why are they hell-bent on our destruction?

Rather than The War Of The Worlds.

Damn confusing.
Edit WOTW was an 8 epidoe season, TWOTW is a 3 episode mini series.

I wonder at what point “influence” becomes “plagiarism”. John Christopher was sailing a tad close to the wind at times, I think.
The BBC adaptation was good on its own terms but having departed so much from the novels it made it very hard to pick up the story in The Pool of Fire from the unresolved cliffhanger at the end of the TV version of The City of Gold and Lead (for anyone who had to do it that way ... I didn’t )
I’ve never quite understood the reason for most of the changes to the basic story for TV, although I suspect it was the budget. The Masters feature much more heavily in the novel and the characters spend a lot more time in the alien environment.

Re: The War Of The Worlds
Paul, are you the editor of the series, how could you say before it was broadcast?
Was it about aliens or fornicators?

I know episodes 1 & 2 were available 1 month ago, I haven't watched them yet. Episode 3 doesn't seem to be out there ATM from my sources, Paul's may be different.

Web-based services of dubious legality. Well, the services themselves are legal, but the sharing of copyrighted material is a civil infringement and in some cases criminal. Newsgroups and BitTorrent were always the major ones.
The War of the Worlds is a major international co-production that has already been broadcast elsewhere in the world. Hence copies of it are out there. I suspect that's one of the reasons the BBC hasn't kept it for its Christmas schedule (it was originally earmarked for Christmas 2018 but the post-production ran into difficulties with the special effects). The other reason would be that the reviews haven't been brilliant.
I watched it tonight as broadcast. It was good enough but it looks like they haven't been able to resist the urge to use it to be massively preachy about early 20th century conceptions of morality and empire (extrapolating far beyond anything HG Wells may have had in mind).

There was no episode 3 in those releases, the NZ broadcaster they were sourced from edited the original 3 episodes into 2 longer episodes.

Yep, and I agree with those reviews.
It was largely just dull - and confusing as it kept switching to the future.
(Hey guys, look, we beat them - talk about embedding a massive spoiler).
Also, as Chris noted, yet another preachy BBC production (much like Dr Who now).

Re: The War Of The Worlds
It's a shame people try and see 'agendas', particularly if the BBC are involved. HG Wells was a socialist, so if there is anything, it's just reflecting the author.
Finally made a start on my Blake's 7 boxset (3 episodes down, 49 to go, never seen Mrs K look more depressed ). No doubt that would be dismissed as lefty socialist claptrap these days, with freedom fighters against the system. In 1978 it was just entertainment with wobbly sets as a bonus, nobody asked or looked for anything more.
