sharing internet connection

I have been with ntl/vm for 6 years now and i just have one pc and one cable modem....what i would like to know is: if i buy a laptop and want to share the internet connection do I have to contact vm and ask them to replace my modem with a cable router...so as i can pick the signal up from my laptop.....and if this is the case would it cost to have my modem replaced and indeed is it legal to have two computers sharing the same connection?...

as you may guess i am totally ignorant to networking and I want to make sure i do everything right and legal.

Thanks.

Re: sharing internet connection

Nope you will always need the cable modem you currently have.

In addition, to share your connection, you would need a router (wireless if you want that too). Just make sure that is is cable compatible, i.e. does not have an ADSL modem, inbuilt, and instead has an ethernet WAN (internet) side RJ45 port.

The last time I looked you could have at least three computers on your single Virgin Broadband.

I've had upwards of 10 devices connected and never got anything said about it.

Re: sharing internet connection

It works like this:

Virgin Broadband modem ---> Wired or wireless router----> All computers hook up to router.

Your computers connect to the router either by ethernet or if you have purchased a wireless router wirelessly.
If the laptop has wirless you can connect it anywhere round your house. Your PC might not have a wireless card so in that case you can hook that at the back of the router using ethernet cable. You can have both wired and wireless.

As others have mentioed, when buying make sure you go for a router that is not ADSL.
Some good recomendations here:

Power off modem

Plug modem ethernet to router WAN input
Plug router LAN output (usually one of four) to PC ethernet (or your can go wireless)

Power on modem
Power on router

Re: sharing internet connection

I first signed onto then Cable London, then Telewest and now Virgin several years ago just for the telephone services; however it was with Telewest that I actually signed up to their cable & internet services because I was constantly hogging the telephone line with dial-up internet.

When Telewest first installed my wireless internet services the installer said that I could only use their internet & e-mail services, which made me laugh because I though the whole idea of internet was freedom to roam - freedom of choice. As soon as he left his router with PC card that only allowed one person to use the internet at a time, I jumped on my bicycle (literally) and brought my own cable-router and plugged it in and continued using AOL along with my brother, three of us now share this connection. Wireless took off so fast in the US because it allowed more than one person at a time to share the broadband.

A word of warning: obviously most of my neighbours had also signed up for similar services and like myself also brought their own router, but at one time I could access at least five different unsecured networks (and log onto them when mine went down) – So make sure you secure your network with some basic encryption and also secure your router to use only specified mac addresses – this would stop any paedophile accessing child porn through your network. Another added layer of security is once I have set up the network I switch off my SSID broadcast so the network becomes invisible, but still works perfectly.

I personally use Netgear equipment but check WHICH, also available in most libraries, which is best for your own use.
