Re: UPDATED: Julian Assange: Wikileaks Founder Arrested

We shouldn't extradite to any place we can't extradite from. I believe you can't extradite a US citizen from the US so we shouldn't extradite to there. If Assange isn't UK citizen we have a bit more freedom, should involve his national representative.

Why is it so much easier to extradite someone from the UK to the U.S. than in the other direction

  • It isn’t. The United States has not denied a single extradition request from the UK under the treaty; the UK has denied 10 requests from the U.S. since the treaty took effect.
  • Moreover, extradition requests from the U.S. to the UK have taken as long as 13 years to work their way through the UK and European courts. For extradition requests from the UK to the U.S. the subjects are in most cases extradited within several months.
  • A panel of UK extradition experts, led by well-respected retired judge Sir Scott Baker, found that the treaty is fair and balanced. Its report, issued in October 2011, provides considerable data and analysis to support the panel’s conclusions.

Any problems and delays are result of the UK and Europe. Anyway he's Australian.

Said it before, all Assange need do is cut up large chunks of their carpet and glue them to the soles of his shoes, then he can come and go as he pleases and no one can stop him as he's standing on Ecuadorian territory
I'm assuming that this is meant as a joke.

Now that he's been arrested, Sweden is considering reopening the investigation into rape allegations.

More than 70 MPs have signed a letter urging the home secretary to ensure Julian Assange faces authorities in Sweden if they request his extradition.
...
The letter, signed by mostly Labour MPs, urges Mr Javid to "stand with the victims of sexual violence" and ensure the rape claim against the 47-year-old can be "properly investigated".
And they seriously expect us to believe that is the reason behind their letter?

Tbf the only thing the guy has been found guilty of is skipping bail for charges that were dropped anyway. Has to be said he doesn't help himself, but that doesn't make him an enemy of the state. This is all to do with the US, and having their illegal activities exposed. I wouldn't think extradition is a given, our judiciary can be be independent thank goodness.

They were dropped on technicalities AS A RESULT of him skipping bail.

I wonder what all those Labour MPs were saying about the prospect of him being sent to Sweden when the situation originally arose?

They were dropped because the Swedes accepted they couldn't get to him in time to make a case stick. Not because there was no case to answer.

Personally, I think that when it started, Wikileaks was a good thing for society. It shone a light on some of the more nefarious activities undertaken by all governments, seemingly without any agenda beyond holding those in power to account.

I think it's a long way from that now. Wikileaks seems to have become a tool for Julian Assange to make a name for himself, to become famous. I think that various intelligence services have, whether he is aware or not, taken advantage of that, and used him (and therefore Wikileaks) to leak intelligence with the aim of causing massive disruption.

Do I believe the rape accusations? I don't know. I believe the man is a narcissist, and is in this for his own ends, rather than the good of society, but none of that indicates being a potential rapist.

The news reports I have seen appear to contain conclusive evidence, a statement which I would say is backed up by the fact he ran and stayed in another embassy for 7 years rather than face court.

Re: UPDATED: Julian Assange: Wikileaks Founder Arrested

Even at the time he was dodgy. It just so happened a stopped clock is right twice a day and he got two legitimate public interest stories amongst all the other leaks he obtained and released which were not so legitimate. Even then it may well be that The Guardian and The New York Times were responsible for filtering and reporting on those stories, his relationship with them soured quite quickly and they've since stated that he was a loose cannon willingly wanting to publish unredacted material even if it named informants and put them in danger.

From 2013

Quote:
A senior judge from Sweden’s supreme court, Justice Stefan Lindskog, has told an Australian audience that Julian Assange’s argument he cannot stand trial in Sweden without being extradited to the USA is not as black and white as the wikileaker would have us believe.

Lindskog yesterday told an audience at the University of Adelaide that unless Assange is charged with a crime that directly correlates to a law on the books of both Sweden and the USA, the Scandinavian nation won’t be able to hand him over.
Quote:
Lindskog also says “extradition may not be granted for military or political offences” and explains that Swedish law won’t permit extradition if the subject of such a request is likely to experience persecution or “is serious in any other respects” or "is contrary to fundamental humanitarian principles”.
Sweden is the epitome of a fair and transparent country..and I'm sure Assange would have had a fair trial.

Julian Assange has been sentenced to 50 weeks in jail for breaching his bail conditions. +
£16m of taxpayers’ money on policing resources outside the embassy for the period.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange cannot be extradited to the United States, a court in London has ruled.

The judge blocked the request because of concerns over Mr Assange's mental health.

The 49-year-old is wanted over the publication of thousands of classified documents in 2010 and 2011.

The US claims the leaks broke the law and endangered lives. Mr Assange has fought the extradition and says the case is politically motivated.

The US authorities have said the decision will be appealed.

District Judge Vanessa Baraitser outlined evidence of his self harm and suicidal thoughts and said: "The overall impression is of a depressed and sometimes despairing man fearful for his future."

Wasn't Anne Sacoolas extradition request from US to UK rejected? I'm pretty sure it was....
