Rental e-scooters . . .

Rental e-scooters to be made legal on UK roads from Saturday

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53219331

I think this will be another 'great idea' met with hoots of laughter and the wailing of sirens

Where do you stand insurance wise when one hits you?

. . . or you hit them

Oh, God! Bikes were bad enough...now e-scooters! How many more hazards do motorists and pedestrians have to face to appease the greenies?

From the link in your link
Quote:
- licence details of users will be captured by operators
- operators have appropriate insurance in place – motor insurance requirements apply to e-scooter operators, therefore a minimum of third-party cover is required by operators (though not a legal requirement, they may also want to insure against vehicle theft/damage and include personal insurance too – to all users or on an optional basis)

Re: Rental e-scooters . . .

Maybe we will see a surge in the sale of quality dashcam/GoPro as people try to ensure their bottoms are well and truly covered for insurance claims?

Re: Rental e-scooters . . .

Having been swiped by these damned things a couple of times now whilst I was on foot on pavements, I expect a lot of trouble landing into the laps of the hiring companies.

The French side of the family says they are abandoned all over Paris after being involved in accidents they caused, or after being used in crimes.

But why are just the hired ones being made road-legal?

The vehicles are banned on pavements, will be limited to 15.5mph and it is recommended that riders wear helmets.
On pavements and narrow alleyways they would be.

I have been told that many brands can be "fixed" to provide 30+ mph.

I have been passed in a 30mph zone by kids on them.

And even "limited" to 15mph, they are still too fast to purse on foot, and are agile enough to evade more powerful vehicles.

Re: Rental e-scooters . . .

I used Voi scooters on a work trip and it was great fun! The nearest hotel to our work was about a mile away but right close to the main station so I thought I would give it a go. Day one was me flying past my colleagues walking to site flicking the V's. By day four, we had a fleet of us riding into work.

There will be a surge in "paralegal's" chasing after ambulances no doubt

How much does it cost to hire a scooter???

The reason that only rentals are being legalised, is that it’s the only really effective way of ensuring that traceable, road legal scooters that are insured by the owner, are allowed. You can’t avoid paying for insurance as it will be a component of the rental charge.

I hope that these scooters are cyber secure unlike the ones in Brisbane which were hacked to play offensive messages to the riders - oops
