Best password manager.

Can anyone recommend a decent Password Manager as I think I need one because I keep forgetting my passwords.

Are they safe to use?

I use FF's built in one. Seems to do the job and if you know how, you can view the stored logins as well.

But what if someone hacks your password manager? Keep them complex and keep changing, resetting shouldn't be a big issue is if you forget.

No need to go to such lengths.

Local-only encryption.

Your data is encrypted and decrypted at the device level. Data stored in your vault is kept secret, even from LastPass. Your master password, and the keys used to encrypt and decrypt data, are never sent to LastPass’ servers, and are never accessible by LastPass.


Strong encryption algorithms.

We’ve implemented AES-256 bit encryption with PBKDF2 SHA-256 and salted hashes to ensure complete security in the cloud. You’ll create an account with an email address and a strong master password to locally-generate a unique encryption key.

Another vote for LastPass. It has some nice features not found in the browser built-ins including

Cross browser and platform support
Generate one time password pad for emergency access if you forget master password.
Two factor access with various options
Notifies of password changes.
Share passwords with others including ability to not reveal password, has additional cost (families) for that purpose but the standard also works. e.g. allows you to let kids login to a site but not get to admin screens etc.
Secure notes
Force use of master password for some data
On Android and iOS some apps can autofill from LastPass.

Ive been using Last Pass for over 2 years and touch wood its been fine.

I use Steganos password manager, it has the advantage that it is held locally, encrypted, on your PC and can be accessed from phones and tablets so no chance of data being compromised on a remote server

Another +1 for Last Pass.

Before i started using it all my passwords were things like cities or names with a single letter substituted with a number, the kind you should never use. Now they're all really long mashes of random letters, numbers and special characters seeing as i no longer have to remember any of them since using it.

I've installed Last Pass and set up a rememberable, but difficult, password for it.

Can anyone explain how I get it to substitute the original passwords for random letters etc as Kabbal has done?

Do you have to do this yourself or does it assign these types of passwords itself?

Does it automatically recognise a password protected site, or do you have to prompt it?

LastPass can automatically update the password for some sites. If you open the Vault then near the password entry there may be a little icon to do this.

Normally though on the change password screen of the site LastPass will put a little symbol to the rights of the new password entry, this can access the Generate Password feature. You may need to look to the bottom of the popup to set up how complex you want the new password to be. Although you can set this to huge long password with LETTERS, letters, numbers and $y^^b*!$ not all sites allow this so you may need to sometimes tone this down a tad.
