Nice but not before time. Still takes the full amount of time to watch a film though. Seconds to download, two hours to watch.

Re: Virgin Media pledges gigabit broadband to millions of homes
hopefully they'll start the rollout next summer with a view to finishing it by the end of 2021. I think they have been working on it for a long time and the biggest job now is trialling what is inevitably cheapo naff cpe and ordering sufficient quantities of stock.
If anyone gets wind of a trial you can sig up for can you post it in this thread because I wouldn't mind having a crack at it.
Edit: that being said if it is a trial they are going to want to the router functionality extensively tested and I only used modem mode. Never mind.

Irrelevant to 99% of domestic customers. However their ever spiralling prices aren't irrelevant.

Watch using subtitles at x2 speed. Works on v6 as well.

Is there a way to tell if your area is now DOCSIS 3.1 compatible or it just the case of wait for marketing material to come through and say you can get an upgrade?

If it’s like Google Mesh, it can be dimmed or even switched off.

they have been putting the equipment in the network for a while now to make sure everything is in place next year so in terms of actually making the switch the only thing we are waiting for now is the cpe for the customer end (aka the new shub). The new shub's aren't going to be like previous ones were they gradually phase them in as swap outs on tech visits. They will initially be exclusive for a launch next year where they'll kick off docsis 3.1 with a new 1gbit tier and when you sign up to the new tier you'll be moved to 3.1 and you'll need a tech visit to install the new shub and make sure everything is working ok. Only a fraction of the customer base will sign up initially and it is a good way for VM to manage the migration to 3.1 and monitor any teething issues that may occur.

Re: Virgin Media pledges gigabit broadband to millions of homes
It's all great but i can't see the point for a 1Gbps download speed at the moment, it is also likely to cost a premium but then again there is a 'mine is bigger than yours' mentality when is comes to broadband speed.
But then again if cost isn't an issue then i would probably go for it.

Re: Virgin Media pledges gigabit broadband to millions of homes
I won't be, the main driver for upgrades for me over the last 3 or so tiers has been the increase in upload speed. Having 380mbits down atm means everything downloads in a minute or so and that is over night anyway so it doesn't really make any difference. The only reason why I would look at upgrading to 500mbits is if they made it 10:1 like the other tiers and offered 50mbits up. I am sure it will happen eventually but for as long as it stays at 35 up there is no incentive for me to upgrade. I can see the same applying with the 1gbit tier. Given everything I have read about docsis 3.1 and however many gigabits it can do up and down I feel very deflated and let down that they are launching it with only 50mbits up. The only reason I would have gone for it is if it was 10:1 and 100mbits up. If I am on 500/50 this time next year I will be in the same boat that I am in now and there won't be any reason for me to want to upgrade to the new tier if it offers the same upload speed which I am currently on.
