Re: The future of Premier League on TV.
It’s hard to take seriously an article that advocates giving games away to the BBC and ITV.
Ratings get a huge emphasis throughout when they are largely irrelevant. There’s more football on than ever before so the viewing patterns have evolved and fans are more selective because of that choice.
A nod to Amazon and Facebook who can’t demonstrate the funding model for a return on investment.
I’d like to see the bubble burst for the cartel as much as the next guy, but while people are happy to pay through the nose for the games they do watch nothing much will change.

TV pays a lot of money into football . . but most of it goes to the wrong places. I agree it needs to go *pop* or change significantly

Re: The future of Premier League on TV.
It’s sadly unlikely to go “pop” while Sky financials remain strong. It’s tried and tested, and whether there are other companies looking to enter the market (and I believe right now there are not) it’s a risk to Sky if they lose the major share of games. That’s worth a few billion to avoid in itself.

In my view the future is still Sky and BT despite the unsubstantiated exaggerated protestations of some on here who think the future is very much different.

The only way I’d see it likely to change significantly in the next round would be the league deciding to sell games themselves by subscription or on a PPV basis (or a hybrid). The problem is that’s a huge risk.
I think it’d pay off in the long run however Sky/BT money is cash in the bank with zero risks. Sky/BT also provide effectively free advertising for the league through much of it’s content. That wouldn’t be easy to replicate.

Re: The future of Premier League on TV.
The money being thrown around in the Premiership is obscene. It's popularity never made sense to me, foreign players, fans also with no connection to the cities they support, many never having actually been to a game. Too many interested parties so it won't change unless the punters stop subscribing. Fools and their money....
Support your local team whatever level it's at, chances are it cheaper than a Sky subscription and more entertaining. (and it'll get you out and away from the TV!)

Now now. It’s entirely credible that Netflix could sell their £8 package to every household in the country, which is roughly what they’d need to get the additional 15 675 000 subscribers just to cover the Premiership rights cost.

Except that there would have to be an additional charge to subscribe to football. It wouldn't be Netflix anyway, they are not interested.
Amazon and Disney are the most likely to enter the bidding next time I think.

So even less credible business models than Netflix. I think we can put this one to bed.

Don't be ridiculous. You have no evidence for that at all.
As you know, for example, a sports option will be one of three strands for the new Disney+ streaming service next year. What exactly would they have to do to fit in with your idea of an appropriate business model?

The evidence is in the most recent auction. Falling values and the only rights Amazon purchased didn’t sell at reserve price first time out.
I think anyone would objectively say that even Amazon know they don’t have a business model for Premiership rights.
