Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

They’re not getting that kind of return off the Autumn tests.

They did say that about all those other big sports and look where they are now.

Behind a paywall and very likely to stay that way..

Maybe the Six Nations final on YouTube and that's about the best non-subscribers can hope for.

India v England test series was on Ch4.

This proves that Free to Air channels can acquire sports rights if they are prepared to bid for them.

It is about priorities FtA channels have (I v E test rights only cost £5m) rather than broadcasting rubbish as a lot of them currently do.

lol, sorry final round, my bad.
I was thinking of how BT had put the Champions League final on YouTube and thought a similar approach might be required of the Six Nations. However, commercially it would make sense to put the first round on free to encourage people to subscribe or to visit the pub for the rest of the fixtures.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

I wonder if Premier Sports will step into the gap? (In effect, the original owners of the Eir Sport when it was an independent company called Setanta.)
Quote:
Future of Eir Sport in doubt after rights refusal

Eir Sport could be facing closure after it decided not to participate in the next round of sports rights auctions.

The move is likely to signal an end to the five-year old channel, although the telecommunications company has said it will continue broadcasting for the time being.

Eir Sport began broadcasting in 2016 having bought out the Irish interests of Setanta Sports and looking to emulate BT that had also used its own sports channel to drive subscriptions to its IPTV service.

In a statement first released to the Irish independent, Eir said it was now “exploring options” for the future.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

I've seen a couple of articles suggesting Sky are likely to hoover up the Pro14, although I can't recall off-hand where.

Between that and the current 6-Nations/Autumn-international rumour mill, we live in interesting times where the Sky/pay/FTA rugby cupboard goes.

Pro14 rugby rights owned by Premier Sports in UK so demise of Eir

premier sports is owned by the people who ran setanta? bloody heck didnt know that. So them recklessly buying up foreign leagues which arent watched that much now makes sense...

Seems sky have purchased womens football rights. That'll be good for the female football sport but undoubtedly i can see sky putting up the price of sky sports and claiming they have more live sport than ever before....

I was under the impression that, back in the day, Setanta was well run until it made one reckless risk on the English football coverage. Premier Sports seemed to have been pretty careful, picking up rights on the cheap, taking advantage of rights being dumped by others and getting them cheaper on the rebound. Choosing niche sports with a loyal audiences e.g. ice hockey. Picking and choosing expenditure e.g. going all HD on most platforms, keeping Freesports SD on Freeview despite being an HD multiplex to save money and because it's more sustainable long term, buying a small shopping channel to get a better Freeview EPG number, not jumping to permanent Freeview multiplex from their temporary one at the first opportunity, dumping Freesports Freesat EPG listing to save money. They seem to me they have learnt to be cautious.

I always thought that was the case - Premier Sports appearing after Setantas demise with offices at the same address - too much of a coincidence to be anything else.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

Will be interesting to see how this pans out:
Quote:
The 20 teams in Serie A, Italy’s top league, will vote on Friday whether to give its biggest TV contract to internet group DAZN or accept a lower offer from longtime television partner Sky. The chosen broadcaster will screen the lion’s share of its football matches between 2021 and 2024.

DAZN, a streaming service backed by billionaire Leonard Blavatnik, has offered around €840m a season for the contract, according to people briefed on the process. Comcast-owned Sky is prepared to pay just €750m a season to remain the competition’s main broadcaster.

The bids were lodged earlier this year, but clubs are divided on which to choose. By law, Serie A must decide by Monday or the auction will be void, forcing the league to begin the sale process again.

“It’s a car crash,” said a person with direct knowledge of the process.

This reminds me a bit like the car crash in France regarding their TV rights until some common sense was shown.

That could give me the push I need to ditch pay TV if replicated here and move to Freeview/Freesat and move to month to month subs as and when there are things on I wish to watch.
